I pulled an intercostal and some attached ligaments sneezing (one single sneeze). That lead to rib heads dislocating and about 3 weeks of my butt planted on the couch unable to even breath w/o pain. The muscles/ligaments still hurt from time to time...6 weeks later.

Two things: 1.) Throwing a 10# medicine ball back and forth doing squats in between the throws per an aquantainces request at the gym. After about 10th or so I asked how many did she usually do? She says 100 reps. Legs sore fortoday awhile and my thumbs were bruised making it was hard to use my hands for days. I avoid her now if I see her at the gym. 2.)Breaking my toe while wallpapering my son's room and then trying to ski the next day. Bad idea.

It was a two-day ensemble.
Day 1: Crashed with a 4 year old on a Big Wheel in my own driveway. Coming in a little too hot toward the garage door opener, neighbor's cute trespassing waif darts out from behind my parked truck, making motorcycle noises. I got no out, nothing - truck, Waif, goalpost. As we converge, Waif's face bears the look of a caveboy about to be swooped up by a teradactyl. Nothing to do but grab the levers and cry out to the Laotian god Phuk. Front tire wedges perfectly, as if made to fit, in the right rear wheel well of the Big Wheel - saw the fit briefly, but clearly, from directly above. World's slowest front wheelie juussst barely makes it over 12 o'clock and turns into world's slowest endo, then ends with sacroiliac's impact with basketball goal post. Not too bad, really. It was the cartoonlike slide down the pole that was bad - elevator stopped when jawbone hit the last quarter-inch of concrete before the lawn, driving teeth through about half of the tongue. Waif and Big Wheel were unscathed, which is good (thanks Phuk), because the Big Wheel really is vintage, with original decals intact . . . I should know, having found it on eBay, paid a ridiculous amount for it, and given it to Waif the preceding Christmas. I ask Waif if he's okay, babbling and spewing blood out of my maw like some horror show, which gets Waif out of the saddle, screaming and sprinting for home. There was some mention of PTSD but not much came of it. Ho ho friggin ho.
Day 2: Walking into work two days later with cool new laces in my chin and tongue, as if I didn't already look sufficiently like Frankenstein, moving like the great Sioux chieftain Old Man with Hump, New Agey health-nut secretary convinces me to get deep tissue massage on the back from our new in-building "rejuvenation spa." Flex account covers it, and I damn sure won't be taking any calls, so I am in with both feet, say "oh-Tay I ty it" and am on the table minutes later. My rejuvenator is Ernestine, a 5-11 230 pound 3rd round draft pick out of Nebraska, who I later learn is an accomplished powerlifter, superheavyweight class. She is sweet, farm-girlish, in a "bulls don't scare me none" kind of way, and she is intent on doing her best . . . thumbs like ball peen hammers, but thanks to the Percocet or Vicodin or whatever that
great stuff
was, I feel only like I must be getting my money's worth . . . at least for the first 10 minutes . . . the second 10 are a kind of "damn that's a little much" type of thing. . . and the closing act is the longest 10 minutes of my life . . . two days later the back bruises are kind of a jungle-print motif . . . the jaguar or the snow leopard, I forget. So sore that
shower spray
hurt for days. I'd do the Endo (less the tongue thing, that sucked) five times in a row before another 5 minutes with Ernestine.

Did this many times back in my pro bodyboarding days, but you ride this thing for an hour and it's an all-over-your-body ache you'll never forget:

Picked up a gallon jug of milk in the grocery store and herniated a disc.
Layed on my floor for three days and it was months before I could pull my own legs up into the bed so I ended up sleeping on the couch or floor.

When I was 22 my mom had 3 big oak trees felled. I rented a gas powered wood splitter (thank God), and convinced a buddy, with a case of beer and all the wood he could carry in his truck, to help me. It took us 12 hours split all three trees and stack it. The next day when I woke up I couldn't even move. I don't mean "not be able to get out of bed", I mean actually move. I think it actually hurt to blink. Late afternoon, after a bucket of Advil, I was finally able to get out of bed. Although it hurt just to stand, I made it down the stairs to the kitchen, but knew that there was no way I would ever make it back up. So I went down one more flight into the basement where we had the "big" TV and a huge sectional couch where I remained for 2 more days. However, the good thing about being 22, is by the 4th day I was fine. It would probably take me a month to recover from that today.

A few years ago I did a long swim, then went to the gym for a hard shoulder workout. I felt great for both, and was in good spirits coming home. The first thing I did when home was reach up to water a plant in a hanging basket. While reaching I felt something "pop" in my shoulder, my arm went momentarily numb and I dropped the watering can. I have no clue what happened, and I felt normal soon enough, but after years physio, stretching, and being much more careful with what I do it still flares up once in a while. Sometimes I feel pain my shoulder from things as simple as turning the steering wheel! All from that damn plant!!! :)
Have you ever played ultimate frisbee? I dropped in on a supposedly "casual" pick up game once, and woke up the next morning feeling like I just played in an NFL game the night before.

Several years ago a co-worker offered some free firewood to me if I would go with him to split it and load it in his truck. I agreed as the wife and I had a fireplace and used a few loads each winter. He told me he had a nice Ash tree down and cut to length, and there was more than we could haul there. I asked about tools and a splitter (thinking gas powered) and he said not to worry he had everything we needed. I met him on a HOT Saturday morning and off we went. We arrived at his cabin and he said we needed to get the splitter.....he came out with a maul and 2 wedges......uh oh. He drove to the downed tree and proceeded to tell me he would be back later that afternoon as he had other chores to do. I spent most of the day splitting logs and filling the truck. I managed to fill the truck and get almost all of the remaining logs split and stacked but I paid dearly for it the next day. I couldn't lift my arms above my shoulders for days, and the golf ball sized blisters took some time to go away. I never asked him about firewood again.

I've had deep tissue work on just about every muscle from the waist down over the past few months. I though after getting my quads stripped and the arches of my feet worked on that it couldn't get any worse.... then my PT discovered some coccygeal dysfunction...it was tucked and hooked to the side. You would not believe the world of pain one little finger can bring. Felt great leaving the office, but the next morning I felt like I had been run over by a truck

Not any one thing in particular (though "walking" with my pre-toddler goddaughter certainly did a number on my back...) but I seem to have become a helicopter in the past few years. That is to say I once read a statistic that said something along the lines of: "
for ever hour of flight time a helicopter requires 3 hours of maintenance
". (Those of you who may actually know something about helicopters please feel to chime in) It seems my body is approaching a similar metric and for every hour of "play", I'm having to spend more and more time doing "maintenance".
Oh, and I threw out my back several weeks ago by standing up from the couch...

For me it was back in the 80s when I was in the military and the whole aerobic thing was taking off. I was deployed overseas and part of this elite team of very physically fit guys that literally did nothing but train at the gym, obstacle course and run all the time (well that and shoot M16s after running 10k with chem warfare suits on). We'd compete against other bases who had similar teams. Anyway, we got invited to partake in an aerobics class with a bunch of military wives. Now keep in mind this is the 80s so we're talking Olivia Newton John "Lets Get Physical" cheesey music and Richard Simons-like jumping up and down type of stuff. We were all laughing it up and acting macho the whole time thinking it was ridiculously easy....until the next day. Holy crap, nobody could move a muscle. The wives got the last laugh and our gunny had us running through the obstacle course another dozen times to help us feel better about ourselves. Or I guess in Slowtwitch vernacular - to HTFU. The scars are still there though - I still avoid aerobics classes to this very day. :)

Did a crossfit workout. 1 mile run, 100 pullups, 200 pushups, 300 squat jumps, then 1 more mille run. Could not get out of bed next day. Day after Ironman was nothing compared to this pain. That was my last crossfit workout. Closest to that was trying deadlifts. After all, the big boys are doing it. Nearly put me out of commission for the season.

I empathize with the Wii boxing, but for me by far the worst was the day I rented a heavy gas powered roto-tiller from Home Depot and (not wanting to waste an hour) helped out the neighbors and tilled-up half the freakin' neighborhood..... damn, that's a workout - I don't think I have ever been so sore......

Borrowed the power washer from my neighbor one spring, wanted to give the siding a good once over. Got the idea to get up on a ladder and hit up the gutters with the power washer, while I was at it. Holding onto the gutter with one hand for balance as I was unsafely over-reaching, I accidentally sprayed my supporting hand with the high power nozzle. As it turns out, the water comes out forcefully enough to wash skin off muscle. I removed a pretty good patch from my hand as I watch horrified, unable to let go of the gutter or I would fall and the pain and shock of what was happening stunning my brain to not allow my trigger finger to lay off the pressure washer. Finally got my wits back and let off, came down the ladder, and looked around to see if anyone heard me scream like a little girl. That took a long time to heal.
Shut up body and do what I tell you.
