Will be up in Warren, VT this weekend and am looking to see if any open water swimming locations exist.

Thanks

Waterbury reservoir is probably the closest that I know of. About 30min and pretty nice. Quite a few local triathletes swim there in the summer. I've never done anything other than riding or hiking down the valley. If you're biking too, you should do, at a minimum, the Lincoln - Appalachian Gap loop.

What is the Lincoln Appalachian Gap route?

I know of the gap but is there a solid loop that hits it?

Yeah, you would take Lincoln Gap Rd from route 100 in Warren and go west over the Lincoln Gap. At the end (rt116) you'd go right then right again on rt17 to go back over Ap Gap which would take you back to 100. If you want longer routes or less steep routes, you could do the Middlebury gap (125) or Brandon (73). They all basically go over the western spine of the greens between rt100 and 116/7.

The climbs are detailed well here http://www.northeastcycling.com/six-gaps/

BTW - I have a camp on Lake Dunmore that the other poster mentioned. I would go to Waterbury reservoir for OW swimming. Closer and better access for OW swims, also no boat traffic.

Right on thanks man. We were thinking of doing the 6 gap ride but unsure on how well the TT bikes would be able to climb some of the dirt roads.

Thanks for the info!

All but Lincoln should be fine on the TT bike. I would be most concerned with the decending, and all of the other gaps are fairly wide with good sight lines. Lincoln is very steep and has hard switchbacks. I have lost my brakes on that decent (pads melted). The dirt on lincoln isnt too bad, and if you go east to west, its decending on the dirt (fairly straight and not too steep). The dirt on the east side last time i did it was all pretty flat.

Lincoln Gap should not be underestimated. I did it last year (from VT 100) with 34-32 gearing and could not imagine trying it with less. All the other gaps should be fine with a TT bike and lesser gearing.

Last I heard Middlebury Gap is in the midst of repaving, but it's possible that is done now.

But I guess you were asking about swimming. Sorry, can't help there. I've swum in Lake Dunmore, which is nice, but would certainly defer to CW's recommendation.

SpinDog has a group on Wed nights that swims Waterbury Rez. PM me if you want his email. We have a group that is about an hour plus away swimming Fri and likely Sun mornings in Essex.

As for riding from Warren there are some nice routes. Lincoln gap isnt for everyone, especially a tri rig. If you do App Gap up and over to Gore and back toward 2, east on 2 back to 100 and home should be about 70. Smugglers Notch is north on 108 and a great ride as well. Be about 90-95 if you hit both App and Smuggs. Middlebury is still a mess so should be avoided. I am likely heading out Sun or Mon as well that way to App if you like.

PM me if you have further questions.
