WTS Edmonton

Looks like a good start list on both the women's and men's sides. I expect the Montreal race to be similar too. The bike course looks mostly similar to last year, but with a small loop through a neighborhood block instead of the U turn at the top of the climb. It is hard to say what difference that might make (if any). Cook took this race last year after dangling from the lead pack all race long. Duffy was in the race and finished 4th. Based off what we have seen so far this year, I just don't see anyone staying with her on those climbs. The roads are wider so I bet the moto draft is not as significant as it was last week. Still she is also running fast this year. I pick Duffy, Brown, Kasper, Zaferes. On the men's side it looks like JB is coming back. I think we get the whole group coming on the run together. Murray, JB, Mola, then Gomez are my picks. Sentimental storylines Fernandes and Findlay scheduled to start. As well we expect to see US hopefuls Knibb and Smoragiewicz.

Lake was 20c today. Likely no wetsuits for elites and possibly for AG as well.

Completely different hill. The one they went up last year is about 800m in length at ~3%. This hill is shorter (400m) but at ~8.5%, and the last little bit disappears around a bend. Still not sure how much difference it will make, but probably more than you'd expect. The hairpin at the top is also super tight, but I've also never been able to do it with the whole road at my disposal.

I was surprised to see Jonny is the only Brit male or female racing this weekend. Perhaps he's got some fire in his belly after the way things went at Yokohama and Hamburg. It will be interesting to see if Richard Varga is back to leading and pushing the swim as he did so often in years past. IIRC he dropped the whole field at Edmonton last year. It was a chilly race last year with some suffering the cold so it's nice that the weather will be more favorable. The steep climb ought to dislodge some of those danglers who just barely maintain contact. It's hard to imagine Flora not eating this one up while the top guys smashing each other the whole way. If it does turn out to be a non-wetsuited swim that could make for a good deal of chasing for Richard Murray and company.

With it looking like it could be no wetsuit for the swim, my picks would be Duffy, Zaferes, Brown on the ladies side. On the men's side JB, Schoeman, Mola. I'd love to predict Murray on the podium, but non-wetsuit, he's likely far out the back and would need a mad chase, Likely a 6man break goes early in the bike containing JB and Schoeman, and a few others, those two drop the pack on the run and hold onto 1-2, with Mola and Murray running down the rest of the break for 3rd and 4th (and I think Mola is running a bit better at the moment)... unless Gomez makes that break, in which case, then it's JB, Gomez, Schoeman...

Is this the hill they used a few years back, before they hosted the grand final?

They used it in 2012 (it was the second hill of every lap that year) and came down it as part of the "large loop" in 2013.

Last year I had the pleasure of seeing the Edmonton WTS Sprint race live and in person. I was there working the Race Announcing for the Tour of Alberta, and we shared the venue for the day. The TofA Time-Trial Stage started after the Edmonton WTS was done!

I must say, I knew this already, but Jonny Brownlee is a freak! He swam on Varga's heels. Then they got out of the water with 3 others in a mini lead pack. Matt Sharpe, the young Canadian was the 4th, but then it was full gas for the first 5k on the bike and Sharpe had to retreat to the chase pack. It was that same threesome for the duration of the bike with JB constantly forcing the pace. Then they hit the run, and in a blazing fast transition coupled with what appeared to be 1500m run speed exiting T2, in the first 300m, JB had an over 50m lead and it was all over! And he NEVER let a foot off the gas for the whole of the run! It's all next level stuff with the Brownlee's. They have completely redefined triathlon racing at this level.

I wondered if they might get scored based on their athlete's performances? It would be way more fun to watch them actually race though;)

19 degrees in the water today so seems like it will be a wetsuit swim, don't think Schoeman is racing either. This will likely help Murray, but think JB will be hard to beat. Predicting JB, Mola, Alarza on the podium.

Last year Jonny hammered the bike teamed up with Aaron Royle and Richard Varga. That worked out well enough for me to imagine it might be the plan again this year. It ought to be another exciting one if everyone is healthy and can avoid accidents.

How is Alarza's health after his crash in Hamburg... I re-watched that race last night and he took a heavy blow to the ribs there... I would suspect his breathing is not 100% still which will affect his swim for sure, and probably the run too... If it's wetsuit legal, JB, Mola, and either Murray or Birtwhistle...

If Brownlee gets into T2 before Mola, Murray etc I don't see why he won't have Gomez with him, hopefuly we get to see an old school sadly rare these days Gomez v Brownlee battle footrace.

Doubt it, unfortunately I think Gomez has lost the speed needed for sprint distance. More suited to oly + HIM

Just double checked and it is a sprint. That's a surprise to me too.

I'm going for a Brownlee, Mola, Alarza with Murray and Birtwhistle running Alarza close for 3rd.

It was a cool, clear night in Edmonton with the current air temperature at only 10*C so I wonder if the lake cooled back off below 20*C. The high for the day is only supposed to hit ~ 21*C so it would seem quite close in terms of whether or not wetsuits will be allowed. I bet the great swimmers are hoping for no wetsuits while the not so fishy ones leaning the other way.

Any body else play the Trifecta thing:

I can't pick for Edmonton - its like the system thinks the race has already finished.

There is no contact info on the site to inquire or give them a heads up. WTF?

They have been closing it out before the morning of race day since the very first race. I missed out on that one and haven't bothered since that one.

I guess I must've made by selections earlier.

Closing it the day before the race is stupid. Good way to turn people off.

I'm must be in a pissy mood this morning, just sent USAT an email:

Hi,

I've been playing your Trifecta game to select athletes for WTS races.

Why do you close selections the day before the race? Why not a few minutes before the race? You are shutting people out of playing - no doubt frustrating them, and viewing USAT poorly.

I've been shut out twice, and now I'm frustrated with the experience. Moreover, there is no contact form on the trifectas site.

I'm going to be blunt: picking athletes for an event is a straightforward process and you guys have messed it up. In what should be an easy exercise in community relations is having the opposite effect.

It would only take a techy a few hours to set up a competing site to select athletes and run it far better - and with some corporate donations as prizes and incentives. That's how you build brand loyalty.

Who is overseeing this project? Big opportunity and big fail.
