Vineman - Swim conditions?
Anyone have information regarding the current temperature and flow height of the Russian River around Johnson's Beach, where the swim portion is held?

In the past I lost some skin on my hands due to the knee high water in some areas, and that was in a non-drought year.

Should be about the same. I was in it last month and the levels aren't much different than prior years.

I was wondering about the water temps. We are having a huge heat spell that has not happened for a number of years. This has at least once from what folks tell me have had a non wetsuit
legal swim. Really interested in what it is now. All the rivers and lakes I have raced in this season are way warmer than normal.

Would also be interested to see the temps, I know the days have been hot, but the nights have been in the 40s and 50s. Looks like the highs for the next 10 days are much lower than they have been in the weeks prior.

We swam last night as we do every WED ... here are some items

-- http://www.dklatourette.blogspot.com ... I will have a series of posts here, first is already up

-- Water Temp ... 77deg last night @ 5pm ... it will drop over the next few days with cooler temps (always cooler in morning anyhow)
-- Water Flow ... much lower with the drought, this does not effect water level BUT it effects water temp (higher) as the water is in the river longer moving slower
-- Depth ... NORMAL ... swimming last night (as is always the case) you an swim the entire course if you want with no need to walk ... if the buoys are set as usual, the turn is very shallow but swimmable ... after the turn if you slide too far right you mostl like will have to dolphin / walk BUT that segment is only 30-50 meters long
-- Because the water is warmer there seems to be more algae bloom early in the year ... the water quality is fine and is monitored every day. If water quality is poor by law it is posted and and swimming is not advised ... THIS IS NOT THE CASE ... we have 4 weeks of swimming and it has been different temps and conditions weekly - BUT, overall water is definitely warmer

Hope this helps ...

Thanks Dave! I was hoping you'd chime in.

What's the cut off for "wetsuit legal" for the Full. Is it 72 or 76?

Yes Linda, repaved bad sections on Westside Rd are now baby butt smooth. I just wish they would work on Faught road!

Linda,

There is now currently 40 continuous miles of good pavement from bike start to Chalk Hill Rd ... Chalk Rd is still a bit of everything (as is Faught) the remainder is good pavement ... so the course has 50'ish miles of good to very good pavment ... 6 miles of inferior pavement ... Chalk Hill Rd & Faught will be paed by the end of 2016

Dave ... the course has 48-50'ish miles of good to great pavement ... Faught is less than a mile long, I think that's manageable. -- That said, Faught & Chalk Hill Rd are slate to be re-paved by end of 2016

Hey Dave, How is the smoke? Seems a good distance east, but I'm curious what's going on up there.

No smoke here in Windsor. The fire is quite a bit east of us and the typical winds are west south/west so areas like Winters and Davis are getting it. Only evidence of fire is the busy CalFire Air Attack base at SoCo Airport you will be running around. Sorry but you will have to find something else to get stressed about... ;-)

Always be prepared either way. Never understand why people flip out if wetsuits aren't allow, it affects everyone the same.

As Mike said no smoke issues here ... we would need a bizarre wind flow direction get that smoke over here ... marine layer this morning followed by birht blue skies today and for the next few days

Pretty avg weather day forecasted currently ... cool morning w/ marine layer clearing to breezy conditions (wind orm the south / southwest) with a high in the mid 80's in Windsor

Cheers,
