Upgrading from 10 to 11spd Di2?

Has anyone tried upgrading by just changing the RD? (and chain/cassette)

According to this it can be done if you have an early version of the software, but if you upgrade the you need to replace the FD as we'll.

However, it also says that you need to get all components with the same software build or it might not work. As the 11spd RD is obviously going to have a much more recent software this seems like an issue.

I'm tempted to just connect a new 11spd and see if it works, any downsides to this?

You can't mix and match 10/11 speed front and rear derailleurs. They have to match. This "feature" was added in a firmware update.

I was aware of that, but as long as you don't 'upgrade' the software beyond 2.6 then it should work. The issue I was wondering about is if I buy a new 6870 FD, then what software version will be on it and will it work with the rest of the system if that is still at at 2.6 or below.
