Up and Coming Rudy von Berg

Surprised that he hasn't been brought up in a thread based off recent performances. This is his first season focusing on 70.3 distance specifically coming from ITU. Pretty impressive to be 23 years old, currently ranked #1 USA for Ironman 70.3 rankings, and having 3 podiums in a row.

Notable results include:

2016 Ironman 70.3 European Champs 6th
2016 Ironman 70.3 Miami 2nd
2017 Ironman 70.3 Buenos Aires 2nd (3 minutes behind Sanders)
2017 Ironman 70.3 Texas 3rd

First off RVB has an impressive resume!!! However, this has nothing to do with him, but the Ironman 70.3 rankings are not rankings. I have seen numerous long course athletes touting this, these aren't rankings. ITU rankings are rankings because the World Championship is based on points and not necessarily for finishing 1st at the World Championship race. There person with the most points is crowned world champ.

Ironman 70.3 rankings are points you need to get into the 70.3 worlds race. It is where you finish at this race that determines your rank IMO, and that is what matters, not how many points you accumulate.

The top guys at 70.3 worlds are usually very high up in the points (beside some of the automatic qualifiers) so there is a correlation between how many points you have and how well you will most likely do at worlds.

Either way it will be interesting to see how he performs there as well as the other USA athletes.

On an aside, is RVB American or Italian? Again, RVB is an incredible athlete, nothing against him but how many USA athletes attended 70.3 Worlds last year btw? Any ideas why so many passed on the opportunity? Frankly, unless you are 1,2,3 it just doesn't mean anything. The sport is driven by Kona. Every single American pro, at least for Americans, understands that their sponsors want them at Kona. The big names are all Kona including:

Potts
Hoffman
TO
Russell
Hanson
Starky
Rapp

You might get a few American's at World this year because being in the US it is going to mean more to sponsors this year, travel is shorter, and frankly it is still decent Kona prep with so little travel involved, but I don't expect any of the top american triathletes to be gunning for 70.3 Worlds. This includes the new standout Chris L.

He is American, born in Georgia and grew up in France. I agree about most top American pros focusing on Kona but at the same time it isn't realistic for a 23 year old to do that.
