Unique Endurance/Multisport Events: new ideas and current
Quote | Reply
Based on comments on other threads, I thought I would see if we could generate some creative/unique event ideas or report on events we have found something fun and unique...

To get the ball rolling....

I have attended a few Cyclocross events and have always thought: Why not a Cyclocross Triathlon with a similar course and vibe...

-2 short loops on the swim with a "get out" after the first lop and you have to hurdle a barrier or something before diving back in for the 2nd loop
-"Easier" cyclocross course for the bike (dont want to scare to many potential "novices" (me) off by to hard of a course...keep obstacles fairly tame but fun.....loop course....5 loops or something?...people come out and feel comfortable using their mt bikes
-loop run with obstacles that aren't to much....but unique and fun...

loud punk rock music (hard and fast...like the event) with fun commentary....break heats up in grouped, similar ability age groups and genders...target 30 minutes for winning time...run course is separate from bike course so you can begin the next group about 20 minutes after the one in front.....

i would like to see a gravel bike course, big loop or point to point. some road, some dirt, steep hills and draft legal. something like http://www.vermontoverland.com/vogp/ or http://www.franklinlandtrust.org/randonnee.html start with a swim, or have a few interspersed, as well as trail running, or even better a mountain summit run.

I like the idea of getting off your bike while passing a lake...swim a loop and get back on.....go to another one...awesome!....gravel bike course....(gravel grinders have blown up big here in Minnesota...hell start with a gnarly trail run and do the gravel bike/swim at the end....

So, basically, you want to hybrid triathlon with the mudder/ spartan events?

Take a short break from ST and read my blog:

No...I dont want obstacles like the Mud runs...(those events leave me cold)....not that complex.....more like hop over/scramble over type obstacles....down trees, perhaps a ribboned off trail area through a forest patch....

i think steve-oh and i are kind of in sync. not xterra, tho i like xterra a lot. gravel bike. gravel bike tri. now, you might say, how many people could that possibly be? depends on how wide you cast your gravel bike net. almanzo will probably get 2000 people this year if they let that many in. might get a lot more depending on who they let in. you decide what a gravel bike is.

a little gravel bike, a little otillo, one shudders at the possibilities.

Or maybe ride to a lake, get off and swim across, trail run back to bike, ride to next lake, etc etc. Would make logistics interesting, and require swimming with shoes like SOS.

ever since I came across the Vermont Overland Grand Prix - referenced by jflan (http://www.vermontoverland.com/vogp/) - Woodstock, VT, I've become obsessed with putting on a race like this (I'm not an RD and have never put on a race but would love to some day). Lake swim, gravel/dirt ride, and then a trail run. I think there would be demand. Look at how many people race Tour of the Battenkill each year. Granted that race is done on a proper road bike, but I know lots of guys getting gravel/adventure rides. I think you'd want something that someone would be "happier" with a 'cross/gravel grinder, but something that could be "doable" on a road bike with 28mm's but would be preferable on 33's or wider. Probably need an unconventional distance, say 0.5-1.0mi sim, 40mi 10mi.

The last point there reminds me of the ITU race in Kitzbühel a few (two?) years ago. This of course is the profile of the climb of which they cycled up most of. I should mention it's quite possibly the toughest climb in Austria. 950 m of climbing over 7.8 km.

Here's the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0axb617E290

Definitely cool seeing that type of unique course as in theory it should allow different types of athletes to win. This one was won by Alistair Brownlee anyway though. I guess there's really no way to stop him.

Run/bike/run/swim/run/bike/run. The swim is nowhere near transition.

This might be my favorite non-traditional multisport race.

If you're going it alone it does require a good amount of gear but is supposedly a blast. Definitely on my list for next season.

While I would also prefer a longer swim, the water may well be under 70 degrees. No wetsuit, unless you really want to put one on while the clock is running.

My favorite thing these days after 30+ years of racing multiple multisport events every summer is the week long training vacation. Since it is a vacation, I don't want to suffer too much, but this event, for me, might be a perfect combo of hard racing and relaxation over a week: A stage race where you do a sprint tri every day for a week. The courses don't have to be exactly 750m/20K/5K or always be S/B/R, but should take between 60 & 90 minutes to finish. Some can have multiple S/B/R legs. Some races on asphalt, some offroad. Have a couple of races in the morning, a couple in the afternoon, a couple in the evening. Have the event at a fun, beautiful location where you can spend the rest of each day doing vacation-type stuff or training more if the racing isn't enough for you.
