US Olympic Swim Team Predictions

Here's my best guess on the team. No times just names. Who you got?

Men:

50 FR: Adrian/Dressel
100fr: Adrian/Dressel/Phelps/Rooney/Conger/Greevers
200 FR: Dwyer/Lochte/Rooney/Conger/Grothe/Weiss (Go Badgers!). Phelps swims 3rd fastest prelims time
400 FR: Jager/Dwyer
1500: Jager/McBroom
100 BK: Plummer/Greevers
200 BK: Murphy/Pebley
100 BR: Miller/Fink
200 Br: Cordes/Fnk
100 FL: Phelps/Shields
200 Fl: Phelps/Conger
200 IM: Phelps/Lochte
400 IM: Kalisz/Lochte

Women:
50 FR: Manuel/Kennedy
100 FR: Manuel/Wetzel/Franklin/Ledecky/Vollmer/Geer
200 FR: Ledecky/Schmidt/Franklin/DiRado/Margalis/Manuel
400 FR: Ledecky/Runge
800 FR: Ledecky/Mann
100 BK: Franklin/Smoligna
200 BK: Franklin/Beisel
100 BR: Meili/Hardy
200 BR: Lawrence/Meili
100 FL: Volmer/Worrell
200 FL: Adams/McLaughlin
200 IM: DiRado/Leveren
400 IM: Beisel/DiRado

No Coughlin or Clary on the team. That may bite me, those two have a knack for getting up.

400 FR: Jaeger/Dwyer
1500: Jager/McBroom
100 BK: Plummer/Greevers
200 BK: Murphy/Lochte
100 BR: Miller/Fink
200 Br: Cordes/Licon

Women:
50 FR: Manuel/Kennedy
100 FR: Manuel/ Vollmer / Ledecky / Franklin / Coughlin / Neal

Giles Smith in the 100 fly is my dark horse prediction. The guy I've left out that I'm not sure I should is Cullen Jones. He has a habit of stepping up.

So very similar to mine. The way the selection procedures are written though is that they have to take the 6th place 100/200 swimmers if the team is not maxed out at 26- might as well take a stab. Agree on Cullen, but I think his magic is up (same as Ervin).

I just used yours and sub'd names I thought would be different. I think the order of the 1 / 2 will be different in some cases, but I didn't bother to change it.

Problem with taking 6 is that any relay only swimmers must be used, and at least in the 400 free relay, USA can't afford to swim 3 'B' teamers.

Yes, it's a risk we were willing to take when I helped write the procedures ;). They'll take 6 to avoid a lawsuit and roll the dice on the history of stepping up at the Games.

Off topic a bit, curious on your thoughts on this. Not sure if you've seen it. I was chatting with Coach about it today, he didn't seem all that impressed, but he hasn't read it yet.

Men:

50 FR: Adrian/Dressel
100 FR: Adrian/Dressel
200 FR: Dwyer/Lochte
400 FR: Jager/Dwyer
1500: Jager/Wilimovsky
100 BK: Murphy/Greevers
200 BK: Murphy/Pebley
100 BR: Andrew/Fink
200 Br: Cordes/Prenot
100 FL: Phelps/Shields
200 Fl: Phelps/Conger
200 IM: Phelps/Lochte
400 IM: Kalisz/Lochte

Women:
50 FR: Manuel/Weitzeil
100 FR: Vollmer/Manuel - although I think Ledecky could win this (not sure if she plans to swim it for an individual berth or just a relay spot). Coughlin for the relay.
200 FR: Ledecky/Schmidt
400 FR: Ledecky/Smith
800 FR: Ledecky/Mann
100 BK: Franklin/Smoliga
200 BK: DiRado/Franklin
100 BR: Meili/King
200 BR: Lawrence/King
100 FL: Volmer/Worrell
200 FL: Adams/DiRado
200 IM: DiRado/Leverenz
400 IM: Beisel/DiRado

I didn't pay much attention to first/second place, but these are my picks.

I picked Franklin for both backstroke events, but I honestly wouldn't be surprised if she doesn't make the team except for relays. She has not been swimming well. As for Phelps, I dunno - obviously he will make the team, but I don't expect him to swim any earth-shattering times. It felt like he missed his taper at his last meet.

I don't like Miller - I think he'll be DQ'd. I'm rooting for an up-and-comer in the 100 breast - Whitely would be my first choice, but it's hard to get a handle on his potential since he competes so seldom.

I would love to see Ledecky make it in the 100, 200, 400, and 800. Definitely possible for her. Hell, she could probably make it in the 50, too.

I think Coughlin makes the team.

His last real taper meet was nationals last year, I thought? Certainly didn't miss his taper there.

Franklin has been swimming better lately.

I meant his last meet in August two weeks ago. Maybe taper is the wrong word, since I have no idea where he was in his training cycle when he swam that meet. I just felt like he should have swum a little better so close to trials - he also seemed frustrated with his performance in interviews. That said, he still has plenty of time to get things together for Rio.

I am rooting for Missy - hopefully she will finally hit her stride again next week.

I was thinking of pencilling in Whitley, but I think he gets it in 2020

He always sounds frustrated with his times at in season meets. That was an in season meet, swimming tired there.

I don't think he does a full taper for trials, don't expect times that blow the world away. My guess is a 7-10 day taper, and he'll shave.

Only going to do the guys, but here is goes:

50 Free: Adrian/Dressel
100 Free: Adrian/Dressel qualify for individual slots. Relay guys are, in no particular order, Conger, Haas, Grevers, Chadwick
200 Free: Dwyer/Haas for the individual slots. Relay guys are Malone, Lochte, Dressel (if he swims it), Grothe
400 Free: Dwyer/Haas
1500 Free: Jaeger, Wilimovsky

100 Back: Grevers/Murphy
200 Back: Murphy/Lochte

100 Breast: Miller/Wilson
200 Breast: Licon/Prenot

100 Fly: Phelps/ Shields
200 Fly: Conger/ Phelps

200 IM: Phelps/Lochte
400 IM: Lochte/ Kalisz

*my bold prediction is Phelps swims prelims of the 200 Free and is relatively unimpressive then scratches the event. Same for the 100 Free*

Phelps doesn't need to swim the 100 free to get selected to the relay, his 48.45 should be good enough for a coaches choice.

You could be right in the 200, but I don't think so,

His 48.45 that he's entered with? That time is from 2 years ago at 2014 Pan Pacs. They definitely can't pick him for a relay off that.

You like Haas a lot - curious to know why? For me personally, I'm not sure his yards performance is going to transfer to LCM. Plus he's young and relatively inexperienced and was a bit of an underdog at NCAA's, which probably helped him there. I think it's easier to have a breakout swim at trials when you're a relative unknown (ie Ledecky in 2012 and possibly Whitley this year).

I was thinking it was from nationals last summer, but he didn't swim the 100 free there. You're right, he'll have to swim at least the prelims of the 100 free.

I help coach Townley at The University of Texas so there is most definitely some UT bias in my picks.

That being said, Townley is a racer and is at his best when the pressure is high and the lights are on. I've swam with, and had the pleasure of coaching, some really high level swimmers, but few possess the intangibles that Townley has. It's similar to what everyone says about the great basketball players who love to take that last second shot (LeBron, Kobe, Curry, etc.): the kid's got ice in his veins.

Michael Andrew huh? Bold. I think he's chased too many age group records to pan out as a senior success. Reece Whitley has way more upside in my eyes. I understand the knock on Miller with the extra dolphin kicks, but it's so hard to judge.

Wyatt, Haas seems to be "under the radar" which is bizarre considering he went a 1:30 in the 200. If he doesn't go a 1:45 I'll be shocked. Unless he goes 1:44 instead.

Okay, now that I've buttered you up, here's the real question: what happened to Clark at NCAAs? I've heard it was an extreme case of nerves.

Agree. Won't be surprised if she's left out. Which will be a HUGE bust for Speedo as they sunk a ton of money on her and is their marque athlete going in.

Thanks for the insight. I hope he gets it - would be cool to see a young guy surprise the veterans.

Part of the excitement watching trials for me is seeing who thrives under pressure and who crumbles under it. This is part of the reason I worry about Missy - so much riding on her performance this time around. Her college career is over, she's a pro swimmer with tons of endorsements...even Ledecky doesn't have that kind of pressure. The older guys like Lochte and Phelps have been around long enough that they no longer have to worry about proving themselves.

Anyway, should be fun to watch.

Did y'all see that swimswam has a pick 'em contest? Feel good about your picks? Put 'em here: https://swimswam.com/...st-presented-by-tyr/

I entered mine as above, with the exception that swimswam wants to go 4 deep in each event (6 in the 100/200). I'll update with my results as we go so I can be embarrassed at the end of the meet, haha.

Cool. I saw that but hadn't looked at it, but I just read it and it's open to residents of the US and Canada. Would love a pair of those cool goggles.
