Pete Kostelnick, a 29 year-old ultra runner from Lincoln, Nebraska is attempting to break the record for running across the United States. The current record, which has stood for 35 years, is 46 days; Pete is attempting to do it in 44.
Yesterday (Monday, October 3rd) marked the 22nd day of his attempt, and he reached the 1,500-mile mark. (As I understand it, you have to run at least 3,000 miles to make it an official record.) He started in San Francisco, crossed the Rockies, and is now in central Nebraska. His finish line is in New York City.
Except for one rest day (on day 7), he’s consistently run approximately 70 miles every day in about 13-14 hours. The guy is a running machine.
What makes his attempt credible is his running resumé. He won the Badwater 135, which bills itself as “the world’s toughest foot race”, both this year and last. Among his other races, he’s done the Western States 100.

He has a Facebook page for the record attempt, but strangely they don’t update it very often. https://www.facebook.com/pete.kostelnick?fref=nf
(By the way, I don’t know Pete nor do I have anything to do with his record attempt other than as an online spectator.)
