Training venues in Vegas? Thanks in advance....
Taking a short trip to Las Vegas, and looking for swim venue, possible tri bike rental, and run routes. Unfortunately, I'll be staying on the strip, and may not have a car. Son leaves there, so may have access to some transportation.....

Thanks!

good luck! The resort pools generally open late and close early (I think I was staying at the Bellagio and the pool opened at 9am which was when I was meant to be working). And the hotel gyms don't stay open that late because they want you to be gambling not working out. So I ended up getting some decent workouts in, but it mostly involved intervals on a spin bike followed by intervals on a treadmill. I did run a few times outside - it's ok if you go really early in the morning when the roads are less crowded. You just need to dodge the occasional drunkard stumbling back to his room. But at the end of the day I was only there for 4 days so I mostly just used the gyms whenever my schedule allowed.

If you have a car then you can of course get to some pretty cool trails but it sounds like you will be strip-bound

Thanks Rob. Actually, I have all day, as it's a pleasure trip to see my son who works for Cirque Du Soleil. I guess I can workout pretty much any time.

Thanks.

ok cool - in that case if you get to the pool when it opens in the morning then you should find it empty. btw - congrats on having a son in Cirque - those guys and girls are truly impressive athletes!

If you had transportation, I'd recommend the Henderson Competition pool at the Multigenerational center (about 20 mins drive from the strip).

On the north end of the strip, there is the city of Las Vegas Municipal pool:

There is also the pool at UNLV:

A bit pricey for 1-day pass.

Bike rentals ... Pretty much any bike shops.

(Lots more than these)
FYI you can bike to the multigen and bring your bike into the pool area while you swim.

Finally, you could drive to Boulder Beach and swim in Lake Mead.

Running on the strip ... No great areas other than streets. But, you can get to the track at UNLV (near the Hard Rock).

If you rent a bike ... You'll get some good rides from the shop ... But biking to Hoover Dam and Pat Tillman bridge is a great photo op.

Hope this helps.

John

I was in Vegas last weekend and ran from the center of the strip. .. 7 miles out and back north on Saturday, the same distance out and back south on Sunday. I ran around 8 am both days and there wasn't lots of foot traffic. A handful of stairs up and down, but better than stopping at red lights.

I enjoyed seeing the strip from the road during the day. I've been there 10+ times and never seen the strip like that

There's also http://bikeblastlasvegas.com/bike-rentals/ for bike rental - though I've never rented a bike when in Vegas. May try when I go this year.

I've swam at the Las Vegas Municipal pool. Not a bad facility. Getting a taxi to isn't bad as there are taxis at every hotel - though they don't know where it is. To get back to my hotel I ended up walking down the strip to a hotel to find one.

As for Running - just run along the strip in the morning. The traffic (both car and foot) isn't bad. Plus you get to play "Still up or Just up" with the people you pass. It usually pretty easy to play outside as those that are in workout clothes are most likely the "just up" and those dressed up are "still up" from last night.

Just a suggestion - don't go running outside at 1pm in the beginning of august. It's HOT outside... unless of course you're used to that heat..

Running is going to be tough. You will probably need to stick to the sidewalks near the strip.

If you are going to get a bike, route 159 (AKA Charleston) is about 12 miles from the strip. It loops around on the southwest side. That's your best bet for riding.

Ive done this quite a few times. Start your runs at 7:30 and you will have empty sidewalks. You will have to run the overpasses regardless of which way you head (which is fun and adds in some strength work). If you run the full strip from circus circus down to the whole foods you have a 10 mile loop. Also there is a wide gravel shoulder just past excalibur that is a perfect 1'km stretch of purely flat running.. Depends on what hotel you are in, but the pools are generally pretty big. I know we always stay at the Wynn for interbike and there pool is 80 meters long and you can practice your open water turns. You wont have much luck on the bike unless you don't mind hitting the gym. Most gyms are well equipped and have treadmills rated to at least 12.5 mph.

The henderson multiplex is epic, and crazy cheap. Angela Naeth, Chris Bragg, etc use it as their home training grounds. If you do want to ride, red rock canyon loop is amazing, and so is the loops out by lake las vegas. both are within 25 minutes.

Thanks Jordan. I'm staying at the Mandalay Bay. I hope to be able to get out of the strip a bit, but not sure yet. I will have all day, as it's playtime for me....not work.

Thanks all who have added tips. I appreciate it.

Gary

Gary,
I was in Vegas (Summerlin, actually) last week. I rented a Cannondale Super Six Evo from a place called Mcghie's. They have, I believe, three locations in Vegas. They and others will deliver rental bikes to your hotel.
They were very helpful with route suggestions, water, putting my pedals and saddle on, etc. I did the climb on route 160 west toward Pahrump, then back down on to 159 through Red Rock Canyon and back to the store. About 50 miles. A good afternoon!
