My bike won't let me get a 25mm tire on the rear. Just won't happen, the manufacturer has confirmed.

Is there any sin in going 25 in the front and 23 on the rear?

25 front and 23 rear just sounds weird. I think you risk angering the cycling gods if you do this and there is no telling how their wrath will be felt, but my guess is kamikaze ninja squirrels on downhill turns.

So what is the difference between 23 and 25 up front?

23 vs 25 in the back is different. Not sure you would really notice the extra 2mm in front, would you? Hummm.. would be fun to double blind.
