Thule roof rack and Zipp 808
Wondering if anyone has found a solution for carrying a bike with Zipp 808 on a Thule roof rack? The wheel strap is not long enough to close over the 808 rim. Swapping out the wheel for transport is my temporary solution but would love to know if someone has figured something else out.

Cheers

I have hte same issue. IT's jsut long enough however that the "hole" at hte end of hte strap on my Rocky Mounts will pass through the buckle, but it won;t rachet. I use a small padlock to secure it.

Another option is to just use a short velcro strap or buckle strap and not both with the clamp. You just trying to make sure that the bike doesn't do an endo or the wheel bounces out of tray if you go over a huge dip in the road or do some jumps at a off road rally cross event.

Some answers I've heard of

1. Zip ties
2. Velcros (thick heavy duty ones mind you)
3. Swap out for a shallow depth wheel or a pair of training wheels

YMMV

You could use a nylon toe straps (but might need 2 per wheel) or, even better, Velcro "one-wrap" hook/loop tape. I suggest you get 1" wide one-wrap, avail at most home depots.

Head to your closet Home Improvement store and search the Velcro straps section. The one that begins with an L by me sells various lengths, widths WITH PADDING. I bought a large roll the last time I shipped my bike in a hard case and it worked much better than anticipated.

Sell the Thule rack and get this... It clamps onto the side of the rear wheel (mostly just touches the tire).

I have had both older Thule racks and last year I had to get a new set of Thule racks (plastic tension pieces went bad over time). The older wheel strap was too short to hold a Zipp 808 (firecrest). The newer Thule rack came with longer wheel straps. I can lock the 808s down fine with the newer wheel straps.

Conversely, before I got the new racks with the new straps, I use to tie the wheels down with an old bike tube (cut it and then just would tie it down to the bike rack). A couple of knots and it held just fine.

I use a small bungie cord (tied a few nots to make it shorter) and it works fine with my 88mm rear.

When I had a roof rack, I used Toe clip straps

I think there are 2 different lengths of the Thule ratcheting strap. The one that came with my 599XTR rack fits around my Sram S80 wheel. The one that came with my V2-590 rack is too short.

Yep-the bungee cord is the best solution to this I have found.

Sometimes people let technology get in the way of common sense....just take an old shoe lace and tie the wheel to the rack. Done!

I have Zipp 404 and a Thule roof rack. My bike mechanic said I should not be putting my bike up there and using the straps to hold my wheel on. He said it was bad for the wheel becuase it was a carbon rim. Have any of you heard this or had problems? Because I did think the strap was not long enough and was considering velcro traps too.

Crazy timing. I just spoke to Thule today about this. Was looking at their Sprint 528 rack. They said the straps were not long enough for the 808 and tire. They did not offer up a longer version.

Bought about 10m of the stuff from Lowes and use that (with the "soft" side against the wheel). Wrap it around the wheel and rack 2-3 times and it's all good.

(PS, I wither remove the Thule strap so it doesn't flap around, or slide it forward of the rear wheel and fasten it to itself. Both options work)

I have a Yakima rack and my Enve 9 rear wheel is way too tall, this is however easily handled by a toe strap that used to hold my tubular under my seat. But I am all carbon clincher now so It can serve rack fastening purposes.

I have the HED jet 9 and had the same issue initially. I took some time and used Velcro and / or bungee cords. It wasn't perfect because the bungee had too much give and the the Velcro seemed kinda suspect. I worried about the Velcro on longer trips and higher speeds.

The solution is what some others have said ...... Old clip in toe straps.

They are solid, snug down without over tightening, and are dirt cheap. I run the Thule strap over the wheel and then the toe strap over the Thule strap.

You may be able to get a strap out of your LBS scrap box or order a set online for a few bucks.
