Thanyapura Sports And Leisure Club/Hotel (Phuket,Thailand)
Hi All,
After being sidelined for the past 3-5 years due to illness,I am presently in rebuild mode and hopefully I will be "reasonably" competitive at Half-Full IM distances by year end or early 2016.
I just returned from a 3 day stay at Thanyapura Phuket,my second visit in 6 months.
Although in retrospect I should have taken substantially more pics than I did,I generally turn off my phone and lock it up in the safe when training.
Thanyapura as many of you are aware,is under the guidance of our friend and fellow athlete Macca who is the Executive Chairman.
As a frequent business traveller globally, the service standards(IMHO) in many parts of Asia far surpass those of the rest of the world. At Thanyapura, even by the fussy standards that I prefer the attention to detail is all encompassing.
For those that are looking to put in a solid block of training on your own / group,or with guidance from the very best,in an environment that I could not find any box unchecked, this is the venue.
I could probably go on plugging the benefits and advantages of staying here for paragraph upon paragraph, but their website probably comes closest to summing up the vast services, facilities and expertise available at Thanyapura.
I will touch on a few that really appealed to me:
- The rooms are designed for triathletes, with an enormous cupboard right inside your room with a massive hook to hang your rig.
- Top of the line flat screens (Samsung) hanging opposite your bed, with at least 20 HD international stations (6 sports) to keep you updated and entertained when winding down.
- The non-Olympic pool pictured (black spaced lines on the bottom) is right outside your front door and is 25-30metres long with a health bar at the end serving freshly made juices or smoothies with added supplementation (whey, etc) should you wish.
- Food is all Organic from the immediate area and all menu items are broken down nutritionally so you know exactly what you are consuming.Menu is designed and monitored by the on-site Nutritionist and chefs are professional at 5 Star Hotel level. Food and selection is simply 6 star.Customized juicing takes 3-5 mins max.
- The running track is 500m long, brand new and cushioned at Olympic quality. Swimming pools are ozonated with underwater cameras for stroke correction on personal / coach use.
- Gym has the best machines I have ever used (and I am an ex-lifter from the 80s).
- WIFI...how could I forget,is FREE and absolutely everywhere within the compound with a very strong signal.
- The Coffee shop and adjoining shop sells everything us fussy triathletes want, electrolytes, post training protein drinks (all from Australia) Organic coffees, freshly made pastries, etc.
ok thats enough.....for the single dudes out there, there is plenty of eye-candy as well.
It seemed to me that not only athletes of various sports frequent the resort (Sharapova, numerous Olympic swim teams from around the world,Muay-Thai,Cyclists,Tennis professionals, etc) but it equally caters to individuals who desire wellness getaways and recuperation for injuries or the mind as their are Chiropractic,Physio and more individual Medical specialists on hand.
Having lived in South East Asia for 22 years,I have travelled to Thailand probably 30 times. The staff here are equal to the best I have encountered at 5 star hotel resorts.
Anybody who may be heading to Phuket to race in November / December I would recommend spending at least a few nights at Thanyapura in the lead up or whatever suits your schedule.

Cheers,
Terry

I am actually in Singapore at the moment @BigCheese.
I am sufficiently swim fit and 80% run fit, but have been unable to resume cycling unfortunately so unlikely I will be racing any tri's prior to Aug/Sept. I should be back on the bike by May.
Thanks for the comments !

Thanks BigCheese. Any event in Singapore that is bike related with the masses, involves far too many inexperienced cyclists for my comfort levels unless it is effectively an out and back or similiar.I stopped doing any events shorter than 90km or loop courses for that reason. "Stay left" or "passing on your right" is usually misunderstood or ignored, similar to domestic driving where there us no fast lane in Singapore.
Very much hope to participate in MetaMan in Bintan though or maybe even the OD in Bintan as well.

Just reread my response to your original question. Should read I will NOT be participating in any tri's until Aug/Sept. at the earliest.I have one more year in the 45-49 and with normal hematocrit and hemoglobin for the first time since the late 1990s,so no longer racing 'at altitude' compared to the rest of the field for once.

Thanks very much for asking.

thanks for sharing this! i have a 2-week mandatory block leave from work this summer and was looking for a place where i could vacation and train. Do you know the rest of the area well? I have been looking at flights the whole day and think i can do 5 nights here, then a couple in Bangkok, 3 in Siam Reap, then maybe Kuala Lumpur or HK on the way back to NYC. Any other sites i could or should visit within a 10-day time frame? (thinking late august) THANKS!

Hi Chiquipartner,
First off unless you know people in HKG or KL the wisest trainng you will get in there will be at your hotel gym/pool.That said,if you are creative you can get some tremendous workouts in.I have not been to Siem Reap as of yet but would be surprised if you could get any quality cycling in,although I may be wrong.
Bangkok does have a good group run by Vinnie from IRONGUIDES so you may wish to check with him.
What I can advise on is Phuket ,Singapore and Koh Samui(Thailand).
Although your question is pretty straight forward,it really does depend what you wish to accomplish athletically on your trip and what else you wish to see and do.
If it is your first trip to the region,I personally feel it would be a waste to put in a 15-25 hour training block per week, leaving you with little energy to appreciate your surroundings and environment.
If you really want to get out of the "winter chill" from North America and hit beaches, get some quality open water swimming in and hit the beaches whilst getting some good rides and runs in,Phuket covers all the bases. That said,Thanyapura is NOT on the beach, but is easy to reach by bike or by shuttle bus from the resort.Their are beautiful surrounding islands such as Koh Racha which are awesome for 2km+ open water swims where visibilty is at least 30metres if not 50-80m.I would recommend booking 4 or 5 nights at Thanyapura by flying into Phuket.Should you wish to go to Koh Samui as well, that is great for a beach break and some run training as well but I would reserve cycling to Thanyapura and the surrounding area. Their are plenty of athletes there who could advise or you could join organized rides with Jurgen Zack or Macca...contact the resort to confirm what they have scheduled...I have never ridden with Zack but I have ridden with Macca on numerous occasions and would highly advise these options.
Rainy season is May to November if I am not incorrect.Koh Samui weather pattern is opposite that of Phuket. It is a beutiful island in the Gulf of Thailand.
Hope this helps.
I am sure there are many other athletes in the region who can contribute ideas as well who likely have viewed this thread.

Cheers,
Terry

Sorry for the late reply.

Not much races going on for road events..and if they do happen its usually fairly short or looped.

OCBC is a good one if you sign up for the pro events if not starting in the front should be a nice challenge.

Are you looking for events or just to explore and muck around with the odd training session?

Singapore is a regional hub and its fairly easy to get about. Road bike only or MTB..swim run..its all here, heck even the zoo is surprisingly good.

Other nice places nearby: Bali HongKong, Cambodia and Thailand are all nice. Id rather go to Indonesia then Malaysia if you are looking for an experience, but if you are in the region no harm going there, Lego-land is maybe an hours drive if you dont get stuck in customs.

Give me a ping if you want to go do train or just want some advise. Swimming pool access is about $1 or $2, ocean is doable but a bit polluted. Hotels here are expensive here in SG but the standards are good, and if you want to have a laugh just look up the car prices in SG.

Take a cab to your hotel when you arrive, other then that the public transport is dirt cheap and first rate. Car rental is about $100 a day if you must...make sure you are insured under the correct plan if you are intending to head into MYS...

Meta Man might be a good option for you to race.

...Wow this post is all over the place, but I hope this get you started.

BigCheese thanks very much for the information, although I have been based in Singapore since 1993 and have been to Bali,Phuket,Bangkok,Indonesia,HKG,Japan,Australia, etc. and have trained in Singapore (15-20) hour weeks up until 2011.
I returned to Canada 07/2012-06/2014 and have recently returned to the region.

Thanks again.

We have just come home after two weeks at Thanyapura. What a great place!!! The most surprising to us was that is was such a great place for bike riding! Lots of super nice and quiet roads, breathtaking views and so many happy smiling people everywhere. The traffic is no problem and everyone takes care and are kind to cyclists as far as we experienced.

Here is our report with a lot of pictures! It's in norwegian, but I guess Google translate will work ok.

Second week: https://happytimes.no/...tt-minner-for-livet/

Check out our Instagram @lpstormo and @twerms for more pictures.

I would definitely recommend this place for traning (swim, bike, run +++) and relaxation!
