TT Tire Width, 20 or 23
Setting up a 40K time trial bike. Which tire width offers the best performance, 20 or 23? Disregard the lighter weight of the narrower width tire. Does one of these tires have a lower rolling resistance and better areodynamics if everything else in the setup remains the same? The tires will be mounted on a Hed3/Disk combination and I weigh 160 lbs. Thoughts?

My personal preference is a 20 on the front and a 23 on the back. No scientific studies or wind tunnel data to back it, just what I like.

I set mine up like Mike, too. I have a Hed3 front, Renn disc rear...Frank Rehn suggested the 23 rear for extra protection on the wheel with the most weight...seems like good advice, because whenever I've hit the same bump with both wheels it has always been the rear that sustains the most damage.

yep me too---20 front and 23 rear. Narrower tire for the front for suspected aero gains, wider on the rear to support my weight, absorb some bumps.

Thanks for the info, I will try the combination of the 20 front and 23 rear. Now I just need to decide on who's tire to buy.

I've heard that tire width should match rim width.Does this sound familiar?

Just to make matters complicated, you might consider Tufo S3 Lites. I weigh the same as you and run A Hed3 front and either a Hed3 or Renn Disc rear. But they only come in a 19 or 21. I run the 19's @ 160 lbs/sq. in. You can run them up to 220lbs/sq.in. They are guaranteed to weigh <180 grams.

Seems to me that one of the tire companies, perhaps Michelin but you'd have to check, says on their website that 23 mm has less rolling resistance. Seems to me that I've also read this elsewhere on the net. I still haven't paid this much heed as I run 20/23 front/rear combo on Hed wheels.

I don't remember where I heard/read/saw it, but I remember learning that sometimes the wider tire is actually more aero, since it masks the wheel. I would assume I heard this either on Cobb's video, or on his web page.

I'm no expert, but anyone else ever heard this?

Hope this helps.

I was told by a prominant wheel manufacturer that the tire should be 2mm wider than the rim.

I emailed Cobb once when I read somewhere that a 23 mm on a Specialized Tri-spoke is more aero. He replied to me that this was true.

The other thing to consider is how rough the roads that you are going to race on are. If road are more rough probably better to go with the wider tyre on front and back.

John Cobb just answered that question for my Kestrel w/ a 650 HED 3 front: 23mm.
