Years ago when I raced motocross I built a full custom trx250r race quad. Everything was done top notch, frame components, drivetrain, brakes, intake, fuel system, engine, etc etc....it became such a pain in the ass to keep it together...custom this, custom that...finally i blew it up at a race and put on a stock cylinder and piston and re-jetted and it ran smooth as silk...obviously it was slower though, but the vibration went away and bolts/nuts didn't rattle off.. It was wayyy more reliable...like anything else, too custom and it can be a pain, not to mention, the guilt when it gets dirty...

this is for danny boy or tillquist or anyone else for that matter. I just bought a 2006 trek e 11 and love it. however, after reading an earlier thread by Tillqist just a few minutes ago, I'm nervous about the paint and/or the frame cracking. I didn't buy it new, but from a triathlete who no longer wanted the bike. It is in excellent condition from what I can see from the naked eye. I had a bike shop look at it too. They gave it a thumbs up too.
Although I only paid $2,500.00 for the bike, carbon wheels, dura ace throughout and vision bars, I hope I don't run into problems with paint and frame cracking issues. I don't have the original receipt either. Should I be worried and not sleep at night? :-( Any input and or advice is much appreciated.

I don't no.

But I have no crack in the paint or in the clear coat on my new TTX9.9SSL.

here is the response I received from someone at Trek. I don't want to share his name due to confidentiality reasons. He does a lot of testing of Trek bikes. He was very candid. I might keep one of my darker treks and sell the other. I don't like that this is even remotely possible on a bike that cost 5K - 6K new. I think it just may be a matter of time before it starts to show on your bike. However, his comment at the end is a good one...and so true!! The sad part is highlighted in red, but understandably so. I don't think I will ever buy a new Trek bike simply because of the possibility of this happening. Best of success to you.

Hi Bob, Thanks for writing. Yeah, it's a cosmetic bummer but many of our TT frames will develop some paint cracks at the bond joints. Despite paint being somewhat flexible, it's still not elastic enough to cover the strain of the small movement at the edge where the tube and lug join. It's just the hairline thin edge that moves; the lug and tube bond overlap is about an inch long inside. We've done lots of lab testing of various permutations of the paint and epoxy to get rid of the paint crack tendency (it certainly hurts sales!) , but have not yet found a permanent repair method. We have found that it's not structural, and in fact I don't know of any that have come apart. It's true that dark colors seem to hide a crack better than light ones. So, should you be nervous? Not for structural reasons, no. Remember you have one of the most aerodynamic, fastest, best-riding triathlon frames in the world! Maybe put a sticker over any cracks if they're getting to you, then put them out of your mind and go out and have a blast enjoying your beautiful Trek OCLV Equinox 11! Tailwinds,

What kind of paint did you use for the cranks? Does it stay on very good or did you have to primer and sand?

Thanks

I have a Pro car paintet to do the job, but I know she used a spec primer first and then the black paint.
