Swim Question

To the Swim Guru's here...

I am a fairly new swimmer. I have been swimming laps in the pool while my knee recovers and about 35-40 mins into each session I start getting seriously bloated. Gas I guess, and it feels extremely uncomfortable to the point I start to cramp pretty bad and feel the need to constantly burp.

What is causing this? Am I ingesting too much water? Not breathing correctly?

You're swallowing air.

I don't really have any suggestions on how to not do that, other than to say that it will probably get better with time. You may be rushing your breaths if you aren't exhaling underwater. Exhale under, when you turn to breathe, that's when you breathe in.

But you may not be exhaling "enough". Just a thought...

I had the same thing happen to me once I started swimming more (bad knee too). I went months both swallowing lots of pool water and burping a lot at the wall. If you're not already breaking your workout up into 100's and such, I'd suggest that you take a break every few minutes at the wall to let the gas out.

Go with the swim version of Eddy Merckx training advice, "swim lots" and it will get better.

Always exchange air. If you are not breathing in, breathe out.
Never take a big breath. Always medium in the water.
Don't count on any individual breath.
This will serve you well in the pool and OWS.
