Swim Help Please Quote | Reply

Someone posted some swim workouts the other day that I downloaded. Please help with defining a few things:

6X50 w/:30 sec rest (w/ p.b. btw ankles: 25 sculling/25 swim) What is Sculling?

4X50 w/:15 rest (catch up drill with stick) What type of stick?

4X50 w/:15 rest (sailboat drill with board) What is a sailboat drill?

100/200/300/200/100 pull @ 1:55 base What is base? Also, does pull automatically mean using a buoy?

Thanks for any help

Presumably they're just talking about a small stick to pass between your hands in front of your body. You can just tap one hand on the other one instead.

Never heard it called anything before, but this sounds like putting a kickboard between your legs vertically and swimming while keeping your legs still.

Base = time per 100. So here you're looking at 1:55, 3:50, 5:45 for the intervals for the 100, 200, 300.
Pull typically implies a buoy, but you can do it with just a strap around your ankles without a buoy for an extra challenge. This'll work your core and body position even more, though you'll need a fast turnover to keep your legs up.

Have fun playing around with these...

Thanks for any help

Ok, thank you. Sailboat drill sounds kind of strange but I'll give it a try.

For the stick, just get a piece of thick wood dowel about shoulder width length. The stick is also good for teaching flip turns- it forces you to drive the turn with head and core muscles instead of trying to use your arms way too much to get through the turn.

i've been swimming for 25 years -- that workout is ridiclous and those drills will likely cause more confusion to your body than help

Hi Travis,
I noticed that the workout you posted is from my swimming workout blog: http://www.NTCMastersSwim.blogspot.com.
If you head over to that site, you will find many more workouts, as well as descriptions of all the drills and strange words that you might find in my workouts. Just look at the top of the page for the links to "Freestyle Swimming Drills" and "Terms and Definitions".
Happy Swimming!

Hi Jamo,
I've also been swimming for 25 years and coaching for the last 5.
The drills that I post are actually VERY helpful for swimmers of all levels. I've had nothing but success with everyone that has swam with me or used my workouts.
Happy Swimming!

If you have swam for that long and call yourself a coach, then you would know that there is no drill that helps all swimmers. We all have tendencies based on our unique bodies, and certain drills will worsen someones stroke and may help another.... if you really want help, hire a real coach for an hour or two to look at what you are doing and prescribe the appropriate adjustments/drills.

jamo, in sara's defense what I posted in the OP was not one complete workout but were snippets from different workouts.

Sara thank you for the info and I will def. take a look at your site.

Classic ST shit. Random anonymous guy telling Sara Mclarty she doesn't know swimming. Google her... You say different stuff works for different people...she knows her students, you don't. These were cut and pastes from the workouts she gives to the people she coaches. Yet you call her out... Why? To try to feel good/smart? Do you feel better?

Thanks for postingb that clarification. I thought that was just one workout and thought that is odd. Now it makes sense
