Summer trip to Vancouver - tips?
Taking an anniversary trip (sans kids) in June. Flying in and out of Vancouver. Any tips - training or otherwise? I hear Victoria is the training Mecca, but not sure whether we'd get there.

Time with my wife is my main desire, but I assume I'll run most days and I'd like to swim as well. Biking would be renting/ sightseeing with the wife - not huge miles, but she enjoys it.

Thoughts?

For running, if you are downtown, stick to the seawall and Stanley park, or around UBC.

Cycling downtown is not for the faint of heart. I would think the north shore would be the place to ride. You could always ride the sea to sky highway, or take on one (or all three) of the north shore ski hills for an epic climbing day.

You can rent a cruiser and bike the very leisurely 10k around Stanley park with your wife.

And yes, Victoria is great for training. There should be a 3 hour, harbour to harbour passenger ferry operating out of Vancouver to victoria this summer. The ferry ride alone through gulf islands is quite a popular tourist attraction.

Long Chile was a silly place.

The Kitsilano pool is just about my favorite pool in the world. A swim there followed by coffee in the adjacent neighborhood is about the best morning I can think of.

Stanley park is old pine forest trail running, and right next to downtown.

I took a seaplane to Victoria for a whale watching trip. We didn't see any whales and it was still amazing.

And enjoy the oysters and sushi!

Kits/UBC area there are lots of people out running, biking and of course hitting the big pool. KIts pool or lake as I call it, will be open. One huge lane 130 meters long. I feel all sad when it closes. Right behind is Kit's beach and you can tackle the ocean too, which is a lot of fun- wetsuit needed. I took this pix last April when crews were prepping the pool up. I run here too, along the shore trails, beside in the cycling lanes, past Chip's house (lulu lemon fame) enroute to Jericho and the Spanish banks. Typically I'll run or be biking back from Port Moody then hit the pool.

Vancouver is a biking city so there are dedicated bike routes, you can really go anywhere by bike. I don't use a tri-bikes in this area unless I am testing or when I got fit at
<http://www.westpointmultisport.com. Vancouver Island is more highway, rural routes (our house is 3 hours north of Vic) so I do my tri-bike jaunts over here @ the even bigger lake.

Granville street is fun. Hit up Steve Nash fitness for a Yoga class or some weight work. Sushi take your pick. Lots of clubs with live bands and the like. You might grab a guitar & busk for quarters or even bills, anything goes on Granville. No restrictions in parks either so strum after swimming, there is a perfect hanging out area just past the pool.

As the others have mentioned.. Kits Pool will be open at that time of the year. It can be still chilly outside in June here, but it's still worth getting in there and swimming.
You can also usually swim in the ocean at that time of the year if you have a wetsuit.

There are a lot of great running options in Vancouver. The seawall as others have mentioned, goes around the whole city and you can run for 30kms on there alone. You can also run in the trails in Stanley Park and can get there very easily from Downtown. Another option is Pacific Spirit Park and the endowment lands out towards UBC for more trails.
If you want to venture out of the city a bit, you can go running in some of the trails out on the North Shore. The Seymour Demo forest is a favourite of mine to run in.

Plenty of options for biking here as well depending upon the type of bike you have. If it's just a cruiser for sightseeing, I'd stick to the seawall. If you have a road bike you can try climbing one of the local mountains (Cypress or Seymour), head out towards Horseshoe Bay/Wycliffe Park on the North Shore or as others have mentioned, jump on the highway and head out towards Squamish/Whistler

I train in both places often and Vancouver is equal to (and better in some ways) Victoria for training. Just busier (and a lot more expensive to live in!)

Loved my visit there. Running around the point in Stanley Park is spectacular, especially as the sun is setting. Have skied Whistler, and a buddy of mine has mountain biked there... he raved about it. Have fun!

You can probably win points with the wife by taking her to Bard on the Beach if she's into that sort of thing.

Not training related, and don't know your time/lodging options, but if you can get to the west coast of Vancouver Island (hour ferry, 2 ish hour drive as I recall), go stay in Tofino or (my preference) Ucluelet. We stayed here Snug Harbor Inn and it was awesome. http://www.awesomeview.com/

You can run or hike parts of the Wild Pacific Trail if training is mandatory

Definitely worth checking out the north shore mountains. Not many other cities in the world where you can look in one direction and see 2.5 million people, then turn the other way and have mountains and forests as far as the eye can see.

If you have a car Mount Seymour, or the Binkert Trail (goes up to the Lions from the Howe Sound side) are great. The Grouse Grind is a Vancouver institution, has great views (and beer!) at the top, and is easily accessible with transit

We did the Grind visiting last summer ~ very strenuous, but not really *difficult* for someone with half-decent fitness. Some nice sightseeing up at the resort area too. We also enjoyed Capilano park (more touristy) which is another easy bus ride from the city. Further up the shore by car is Stawamus Chief ~ another epic hike vaguely reminiscent of Half Dome; not as big or far, but also a few scramble spots near the top where you break out of the trees onto the granite with some bolted-in ladders & chains for assistance. Awesome views of the sound, the hwy below, Mt Garibaldi, etc. Great time of year for lots to do both in the city and more outdoorsy only a short trip away.

Swim at Kits. Run the seawall & Pacific Spirit Park.

Grouse Grind hike in North Van. Ride in Stanley Park.

Hit the aquarium and the UBC Anthro Museum

riding wise sit up the three peaks challenge, seymour, grouse and cypress in the same day. Always a fun treat. Roads are pretty quiet and the climbing and views are amazing

Crits run at the Mission Racetrack starting the weekend after we go to Daylight Saving Time. About 30 minutes long to start. 5 different categories. Usually start at six. The TTs start a few weeks after that - run from Hougan Park in Abbotsford. Again, a six PM start.Feel free to ask for more detai;

Some great riding out that way. Also between airport and US border if you stick to the quieter roads. Flat and fast.

All good advice so far.
I'll mention the outdoor pool @ Second Beach in Stanely Park also, if you want to do ocean swims, Pacific Multisports has been know to rent out wetsuits.
Check out the Musette Caffe on Burrard St. too.

That's one pool I haven't tried, but was looking that the info & saw that it's a 50M. Vancouver aquatic center under the Burrard bridge is also spacious 50M.
Never tried the Musette, we always go to the Container, mid century look, outdoor patio, quiet enough to do business.

Tofino from Vancouver is a ~5 hour trip each way. Even from my place on the Island the drive is annoying enough. Surf this weekend was pretty good, busy of course. Running a 4-3 suit heck of way to burn some calories.

I have ridden on Victoria which was nice, but you have plenty of training tips. How about some food tips:

1. Banana Leaf - Great Malaysian cuisine

2. The Red Wagon - looks like a dive, but their Pulled Pork pancakes with Jack Daniels infused syrup is ruh-diculous.

3. Meat & Bread - name says it all.
