OK, guys, enough whining about paying airlines. I guess most of you think that the baggage handlers are made like the Incredible Hulk and have no issue loading and unloading the 70+ lb oversized bike case. Frankly, I fully understand why the airlines charge. They need revenue from somewhere (they are not a a charity and gas prices are a mile high) and the baggage guy/union have issues with oversized....so triathletes take it on the chin when we pack the Scherman tank hardshell case and then stuff it with our 15 lb carbon bike, the kitchen sink and half of Home Depot.
So rather than complaining about the airlines, let's make things easier for everyone...ourselves, the airline and ticket agent...and guess what...if you keep this case ~ 40 lbs (very possible), and be really really really nice to ticket agent, over 90% of the time you will not pay to transport your bike even though it is marginally oversized:

Good luck to everyone in your travels...and do remember that the ticket agent is your best friend. Treat the agent like you would your wife or girlfriend and good things will happen :-)
