I predict that people with subpar bike handling skills with criticize the schlecks bike handling abilities and claim they can do better.
I beleive they will be incorrect.
I think the way things stand right now its still anybody's tour to win and I hope someone really does something special to separate themselves from the top ten today. On one hand I kind of like that a strong leader hasn't been established this late in the tour. However on the other hand I'm really missing that classic stage that some of the past year's have had where a rider truly shows his dominance and top form in the mountains like in the days of LA. I'd love to see Cadel do that today... I want to see someone look back at the lead pack, smile, and drop the lot of them and go on to win the stage.

With a finish above 8000 feet, I think Cadel is too heavy to be that man today. As I said on the stage 17 thread, if he can hang through today's stage and get through the bottom part of Alpe D'Huez tomorrow which is the steepest, then an attack he makes later on Alpe d'Huez when it is less steep has the potential to stick.....or he just sits in waiting for the ITT, which is probably the smarter strategy, although it will be dead boring. I think today's stage is potentially more worrisome for Cadel than tomorrow.

Cadel does have a real chance for GC victory this year, provided he does not have an off day. But he will do it without a stage victory. It's very tough to see him winning any of the next 3 stages. People will then claim his victory will have lacked a certain panache or polish. And that may be a bit true. But it will be a victory, and in the only real way possible for him. If the race plays out like that...then my hat's off to him for designing such a win.
But frankly, and against what I'd really wish to happen, I like Contador's chances. I'm betting he puts big time into all of them, save maybe Sanchez today. Tomorrow will depend on today's outcome, but likely will see another huge effort to put time against Evans and the Schlecks.
Basso is quite a possibility as he seems to be going well and today suits him. I suspect his strengths would require a better team around him to really put him in the spotlight, though. The pace needs to be super high and arrive at the final climbs with an exceedingly small group...6-8 at the most.

Average speed of the 2nd hour 34.6 kph? Whoa. They must be saving it. That also explains the 9'+ gap.
Props to Hoogerland for being in the break yet again...

I need to time my commute to work to correspond to the descent of izoard. Then I'll be there for the final climb up galibier. I'm interested to see how they have the finish set up bc there's really no place to stop up there.

IF Cadel Evans can sit on wheels through these next 2 brutal stages, I just cant find that boring. Maybe, it's because I just dont think he can, but for him to be able to hold the wheels of AC and/or Schleck's and maybe Sanchez, I will consider that one hell of an accomplishment.

I find the palmares achieved already to be interesting... outside of Sky, HTC, Garmin-Cervelo, and Omega, no team can really be said to be satisfied if the TDF ended today w/o more to be one. Must be miserable for these GC teams to know that they could well end up with little/nothing if they don't achieve a podium!

How do you pronounce Ramun's last name?
Also how awesome is Voeckler? Tells the press he has zero chance but then nearly kills himself trying to attack the GC contenders yesterday. "I try somehing...but...I was wrong"
haha, love that guy.

Is he the one that is just barely in front of the peloton? Or is that another RS rider in addition to Levi's "attack"?

I'm starting to twitch bro. I'm going to invite you out to the driveway and see how well you can attack a bunch of cat 4/5 bozos like me.

To some degree, if he wins this way, it will be very similar to Lemond's win in either 1990 or 1991 (can't remember which one). It would be a huge accomplishment for sure, and he's sat waiting in the wings for this to happen for several years now. It's funny how guys don't get credit for TTing fast, but they get credit for being able to explode off the front of the pack. It seems lately the ASO is going out of its way to de emphasize TT's and make the explosive hill climbing decide the tour, but because of the extent of hill climbing, perhaps no one really goes all out because they are afraid that the three hardest stages are grouped together in the final week of the Tour!

plus cadel has attacked multiple times and explosively chased down many attacks. its a completely fantasy fabrication that he has just been sitting on wheels. one created in the mind because of his reputation. a reputation he definitely does not deserve over the last 2 years.

I said that exactly last fall, when the stages were announced. No prolouge, and what, a 25k TTT in addition to only 1 TT. A freaking TTT that takes what less than 40 mins to ride? I felt like the Tour wanted to please the fans with a TTT but severely limit the time loses that riders would face.

absolutely, and rightly so. its crazy to ruin a top GC guys tour because his team can't TT.
some years what they do is time bonuses based on team TT finishing order instead of the actual time counting.

I think the experts said he was on a training ride. (At least until he lost enough time to not be a threat, then he would attack.)
