St. Louis marathon winner never ran the race
Quote | Reply
I did this race Sunday and just heard the news about the women's winner being disqualified this morning. Who does this type of thing?

Race officials should have been more suspicious when the "so-called" winner showed up without lead vehicles. Why the rush to celebration without absolute confirmation? They bear some responsibility for being duped.

This made me remember an article I read from Runner's World last year where a similar thing happened.

If you're going to cheat then at least put some effort into it. She's a disgrace to the people who take pride in their cheating craftsmenship.

Pathetic. I once witnessed a marathon race cheat. I turned her in at race end, too. She was well ahead of me, in a smaller venue with less likelihood of being caught. She turned around about 2 miles before the halfway checkpoint, and began running towards me, cutting at least 4 miles off the race distance for her. Another woman, maybe females more likely to do this?

I've seen guys do this a tri's before too. I have passed someone on an out and back and then pass them again after the turnaround. Talk about deja vu.

Ready or not here I come!

I agree. Watching the video of her crossing the line and pulling her bib out from under her shirt should have been a dead give away. Good news is she was supposedly going to Boston next week and the race director contacted them to pull her entry.

I don't think women are more likely to do this but at least to me
it's more surprising when they do.

Find out what it is in life that you don't do well, then don't
do that thing.

She doesn't exactly look capable of running a 2:50 nor does she look like she just ran a marathon at the finish. I'm surprised they even sent her time in for a BQ with no recorded splits. You'd figure the actual woman's winner would have known if someone was infront of her?

Women can get away with it easier than men because the mens race leader is more easily identified then the woman who is usually mixed within a bunch of men. No intelligent man would attempt to pull this off because he would obviously get caught. Women have a more legitimate temptation.

Who does this thing two years in a row and expect different results? Any number of reasons could be presented to why someone might try this or keep doing this if they get away with it (http://www.newyorker.com/...2/08/06/marathon-man), buts harder to figure out why someone would think they could pull the same stunt twice with different results. The race organizers definitely deserve some of the blame for this as she should have been flagged up during registration based on last years stunts.

But it seems she got away with it last year, when she "finished" in 3rd. I don't think she expected any different result when she tried it again this year.

And to have done 2 years in a row. These folks must have some real issues.

I'm wondering if the race organizers were so concerned about having a "safe" venue that they forgot about the race.

Maybe a RD can answer this. Is it possible to have the automated finish system clearly flag/warn the timing team in real time if a finisher has crossed timing pads out of sequence. I have been 'missed' by a timing pad coming into T2 at least once so I understand timing errors do occur without cheating but it seams an easy way to quickly screen against cheaters of this sort.

Great question, seems it should be able to be programmed.

To be fair, they DID figure it out. Just not fast enough for some I guess.

Maybe it's just be but in 12 years I think I missed a timing mat one time.

The lead female was escorted by two cyclists when I saw her at the 25-mile mark, so red flags should have gone up among race officials at the finish line when the now-disqualified runner came across unaccompanied. But, I wasn't there to see if they handled it properly or not.

A little check at OnlineRaceResults.com shows that the disqualified runner finished a HALF marathon in 2012 in 2:38:34. It's pretty brazen to try to claim a 3:15 marathon finish in 2014, and a sub 2:57 in 2015. Her fastest 5K finish that I can find was 23:16.

Anyone watch the video of her crossing the line? Looked less like "holy crap I won" or "I just ran a marathon" and more like "I think I fucked the timing up, I'm screwed"

I may have given her the benefit of the doubt that she messed up until I read that she did something similar in last year's race.

Clearly, they should have been watching out for her.

Race organizers owe the real winner a HUGE apology.

It's worth googling Kendall Schler and then pressing the images button.

But it's NSFW.
