Spoiler rules in force during the Olympics

We're half & half on the poll on whether to have a separate Olympics forum. So we'll leave things as is. Just, do not place anything even approaching a result in a thread title, and do NOT place a result in a thread that does not have a spoiler title.
Spoilers required for any result within 24hr the posting on a thread.
If you're posting a spoiler, also list the event in the thread title.

What about non-triathlon related sports? Can I post spoilers for those?
Really, how many folks on Slowtwitch were excited to see the cross-country day of the three day event?

This rule is ridiculous (and my guess, hurts your total number of eyeballs viewing the site during the Olympics). First, I'm sure you have members on this forum coming from all over the globe, and not just the U.S. So you have essentially banned those folks from ever talking about the Olympics since they will be sleeping when the U.S. views the taped-delayed race, and have prevented folks in the U.S. from discussing events with folks from other countries. Second, people who come to a swimming, biking, and running forum and not expect to see any discussion on swimming, biking, and running events are just plain idiots.

no swim, no bike, no run, no triathlon. if it's about sports other than these, it goes in the lavender room.

keep in mind: i'm not saying you can't write about these events immediately after they take place. i'm saying you can't put the result in the thread title.

What are you talking about?
He just asked you to put "spoiler" in the subject if you plan to talk about results.

I don't think you understand the concept of using *spoiler* correctly....

I don't think he said you couldn't talk about Olympic events and subsequent results...as long as the TITLE of the thread is prefaced with the word "spoiler", then feel free to post whatever you want inside that thread.

Indeed.
Not only do Americans have to watch the very narrow view that NBC has of what the Olympic Games are, they have to watch them on what NBC decides is the schedule! In the world of Social Media, that works in real-time 24-7 all around the world, NBC is starting to look more and more foolish now than ever!
How is it that every other country host broadcasters they pre-empt all other scheduled TV to shows for as much of the Olympic Games as they can? What is so different about the U.S., that NBC has to go to such extraordinary lengths to stage and micro-manage the whole games?

The rule seems ridiculous to me. And no doubt will either inhibit the free flow of ideas during current sporting event or result in unintended consequences. The rule is not that you just can't place the result in the title of the thread, but also that you can
"
NOT place a result in a thread that does not have a spoiler title
."
Even NBC is not so foolish enough to think that in today's global world of the Internet and social media that people who visit their site would not expect to the see the results of races that have not aired yet. NBC.com's top headline"
Franklin wins 100 backstroke for first gold
" and "
Lochte Fails to Win Medal in 200 Freestyle
" (Yet, I jus broke the rule as I can't even say that in THIS thread since their is no spoiler in the title, and the race hasn't aired on replay yet in the U.S.). Threads with Titles such as "Lochte is douche" which is about his grills; I cannot respond by saying, yeah, I agree, especially since he cannot back up his I'm the best swimmer in the world by only coming 4th in the 200 freestyle (which by the way, I just broke the rule again).
If people are coming to slowtwitch to talk about swimming, biking, and running, you would think that they would expect to see results from swimming, biking, and running,, and discussions of those results, in independent threads, whether those threads have spoiler alerts or not. And if they don't expect to see such results, they are either living in another decade, or are so self-centered to think that the world revolves around their schedule rather than the sun.

I like the rec.bicycles.racing protocol: top 3 must be posted in the Subject:
Then they make fun of everyone who comes in for the first time and complains about spoilers.
That is the difference between bike racers and triathletes.

I do not know what the issue is? I again watched all the finals of swimming live while I ate lunch. No commericals!! Why wait until tonight with all the commercials? And if one cannot watch live, you can still watch the taped stuff sooner than the west coast broadcast.

Nope...we have had a *spoiler* policy on the VN board for years. Works really well...everyone gets to participate on the board and people who want to discuss results can.
Pretty simple, huh?

Dave,
If you can get the streaming feed online . . . all good!
What's not to like?
My remarks are more directed at the Network coverage.

I understand. It is just the same old attitude. Bitch about something. I try to spend my time finding other solutions that work and meet my needs. Just takes a little extra energy and thinking outside the box.

I'd like to know how many people all gooned up about spoilage go ahead and open up spoiler threads anyway. I think there are a lot of glass-half-empty folks who are just itching to point out some imagined slight or failure on another's part for failing to put that damned word in the title.
It's a brave new world out here folks. Interwebz, 24/7 news, and good gosh a'mighty...you might even read about something before you see it. How's about we join it, eh?
The rule doesn't even work well, anyway. If someone starts a thread on, say Lochte, and someone else posts a result later in that thread from some race he just did, do you expect us to go back and fix the title so that the spoiler police don't get their panties in a wad?
It's a ridiculous rule and untenable in the long run.
And I say this as a guy without access to streaming coverage at work or the NBC primetime cable coverage, but yet somehow having access to Slowtwitch, Twitter, and Facebook. Everything on these sites is a "spoiler" to me. You know what? I still enjoyed delayed coverage of today's swimming even though I already knew the outcomes. No big deal.
Maybe because I'm a little older, I've realized the world doesn't revolve around me. I don't know. I just think this spoiler thing is childish.
Neverthless, it's Slowman's house and I'll do my best to play by the rules.

Actually, I think you have it backwards. Once you realize the world doesn't revolve around you, and that a tiny amount of consideration on your part can help others, you might consider doing it it happily, rather than throwing a fit.

"Think outside the realm of your own experiences? Not everyone is in the same situation as you."
That's just it, I've experienced it numerous ways. It really doesn't change the experience for me. I've never been a fan of the "spoiler" concept, even when I experience results getting spoiled. I suspect much of it has to do with the attitudes displayed by the spoiler police when they get militant on someone who violates their airspace. It's off-putting when good discussion threads get derailed because someone gets their knickers twisted about some spoiler slight and takes over the discussion to demand satisfaction. To borrow a phrase from Paulo, "We have a thread for that."
In 2012, one has to fairly well shut themselves away from the electronic world to avoid news on large events like the Olympics just to maintain a personal blackout until they are fortunate enough to be able to watch coverage. That means avoiding the rest of the world news just to maintain that sporting event virginity. Does that make any sense? Do you ask the restaurant to turn off its TVs while you're out to lunch just so you don't see the swimming results before NBC shows them tonight?
If you want a predictable, fool-proof way to maintain your virginity before you can watch the packaged coverage in primetime, you'd do best to lock yourself away in a cave without electricity. Otherwise, odds are that you're going to experience spoilage. The 24/7 media online and in the airwaves isn't going to stop for you. And office-mates at work are going to talk about the latest twit that comes over their smartphones. And people are going to continue to screw up and post untagged spoiler threads either intentionally or, more likely, unintentionally on forums like this. Slowman's rule isn't going to change that much except to provide an avenue to deal with the intentional offender who is just being an asshat.
I'd also suspect that a huge section of the forum who just don't give a crap about the spoilage concept either didn't see the poll or didn't consider it important enough to take the time to answer. I've been on the forum every day since the Olympics started and never noticed the poll. You can guess how I would have voted. I'm not so certain the poll is a true representation of the majority attitude on the forum.
