I've been riding on a set for 6 seasons now, and I have put at least 7,000 miles on them. They still are as true as when I got them and they ride just fine. Next year I may finally upgrade, but I've had no complaints. I often finish in the top 3 or win my weekly time trial rides, beating guys on Zipps and other high end wheels, so they can't be slowing me down that much. I bought mine slightly used for $500, so they've definitely been worth that. If you're getting them relatively cheap with the trade in, I'd say go for it.
I used to beat guys on full Zipp 808/disc set-up and $10k bikes when I had a 8 year old steel frame road bike with clip-ons... not all that aggressive of a position and didn't pace my rides very well.... what's your point? In an Olympic it was about a 4 minutes slower set-up for me. You're either very fast or need better competition. But those wheels aren't doing you any favors, but position and helmet selection have a bigger impact and tire selection can be about the same as wheels. I still ride a pretty good pace on box rims with Gatorskins.... but I sure as hell wouldn't race on them unless if was a gravel road TT.
There's no correlation between the size of an athletes motor and the size of their pocket book. Folks should buy the most equipment they can afford or proportional to their level of involvement in the sport as part of their lives, nothing more.
