Speed skiing position

Read an interesting article earlier today in the FT on the niche sport of speed skiing and thought it was fascinating how similar the position looks to cycling.

These guys are absolutely insane, though! World record of 158mph.

Here's the article. For those of you who hit the paywall, here are some of the photos from the article:

Back in the 1980's, when Boone Lennon developed the first clip-on aerobars (for Scott, if I recall correctly), he was very open that he was trying to mimic the tuck position of speed skiers and downhill racers. I used one of the early incarnations of that bar in June of '89 for my state TT championship, close to a month before Greg LeMond famously used them in winning the final TT (and the overall) of the Tour de France. By 1989 I think Scott had both clip-ons and full integrated bars, and Profile for Speed had a few products as well.

If you google Boone Lennon you'll probably get some good stuff about the development of this type of handlebar, and the resulting position.

This is what fast aero positions looked like before the mid-80's:

Hence why the Scott bars were called the DH, for Down Hill.
