Speed Concept 7 or 9? Quote | Reply

What are the main differences in the frame? Is the layup the same on the 7 series just with different fork and front brake? Looking to purchase and may be better off getting a 7 with powermeter if the frame is essentially the same. Thoughts?

Re: Speed Concept 7 or 9? [dmounts] [In reply to] Quote | Reply

the different is the front/end/fork/aerobars.

You get the totally slick front end and hidden brake with the 9, as well as very very aero cockpit (Aero bars)

With the 7 series you could approximate the 9 aerodynamics with a very good aerobar and omega front brake.

If you are planning to build up the frame yourself, then a 7 with intelligent aerobar and front brake will save some money without sacrificing much speed.

In addition to what Jack mentioned the 9 series frame is higher end carbon than the 7 series.

Not to hijack a thread, but what say you guys on a p2c versus a 7 or 9? getting an itch for a new bike and I'm liking the look at least of the Trek's. Never have been in love with my P2C since I bought it in Feb 2008 from "the best tri shop in Texas"!

Re: Speed Concept 7 or 9? [IronLance] [In reply to] Quote | Reply

its speculation but the SC7 is probably a wee bit faster than the p2, and the sc9 a bit more again.

what don't you love about the p2c? Don't toss away a great frame because of issues that could be fixed with new stem, saddle adjustment, or cockpit or something.

to help you enjoy your current bike, here is a sweet pic of one winning a Cat 1 State TT Championship:

of course a speed concept won the other cat 1 championship

Not any more. They are both OCLV carbon for 2012. The 2011 7 series was TCT but they changed it.

what were the temps that guys were still willing to wear LS skinsuits? I'll be faced with that decision on Sat, with a forecast of 101 degrees (and humidity)

OCLV and TCT are the manufacturing processes.

I haven't checked but I believe the the 7 and 9 use different carbon and lay-up.

It appears that in the 2012 bikes Trek uses the OCLV label for all their carbon frames. Then a series label - 500, 600, 700 OCLV carbon. I think the breakdown for the SC is still the same: 9 series made in the US with US made carbon and 7 series made overseas with overseas carbon. These latest marketing labels look to line up more with the Madone line now that the Madone 7 has been announced. In the past I think they called the 600 carbon Red and the 700 Hex...

I have no idea on the ride difference or weight difference for the different carbon series. Regardless, the price point on the SC 7 series still seems great.

Slight differences in the frame, as others have said main diff is the front end.

I went with a 7, got a centerpull brake (but now based on another thread I need to get my hands on a Tri Rig, those brakes are sick), slightly modified my aero bars and have a slick ride thats probably nearly as aero as a 9 series. Plus I had $$ leftover had I needed wheels, powermeter etc...

See for yourself...

Thanks for all the input. So i guess it comes down to about a $2,500 difference for cockpit and front end. Not really sure their is a difference between the USA version and the Overseas version except that a lot of that $2,500 is probably labor. If i can find the right deal on a new 9 locally i would buy it otherwise it looks as though one can save a lot on the 7 and put the difference into other race parts..... :). Does anyone know if the Flo disc will fit?

Re: Speed Concept 7 or 9? [dmounts] [In reply to] Quote | Reply

I went through very similar decision making last year.
I opted for a 7.0 because I liked the color, planned on using my own racewheels and thought of discarding the stock aero(piggy)bars for zipp aerobars.
I didn't care about the components since they don't really make a tangible difference in speed, but i'm sure i'll end up upgrading to an electronic system eventually.

This is what it looks like:

I want to get an Omega front brake and clean the cables up a bit before calling it quits.
... Maybe even grow some balls and cut the remainder of the steerer tube.

with trimmed cables and new front brake, i don't think this 7 series would be noticeably slower than a 9 series. Or at least not be noticeable at my level of effort and performance.

Oh yeah, i got this bike on an end of the year close out sale for well under 2k. So I'm about 2k in as it stands sans wheels which i already had. not bad =)

the 9 is lighter and I'm pretty sure uses a different carbon, most likely a hi-mod, for whatever that is worth to you.

Different carbon. The description of the two bikes on their website states as much.

Very timely discussion for me. I have the opportunity to pick up a 2011 7.2 for $2500 CDN. It's brand new and left over from last year, so the lbs is motivated. Seems like a good deal. One of the problems I have is my newbie tri bud just bought a 9.5, and I refuse to ride the same bike as him, even if his is more expensive. What a dick he is!

In any case, I'm a Cervelo wannabe, but man that 7.2 is a steal at 2.5k!

Yes, different carbon. But honestly, at what level is someone going to notice the difference in two identical carbon TT geometries? Maybe a tour TT specialist? I'm all about buying at the top but do not want to waste my money on no decernable advantage when there are plenty of other things that will make a larger difference like a power meter for training, wheels etc....

Exactly, it's slightly heavier, and when your riding it you wont know the difference.

Also, keep in mind there are different levels of the 7 series.
The 7.0 is around $2,700. The 7.8 is $4,600.
If you already have race wheels or feel that the 5.0 wheels on the 7.8 won't make you happy, then stay lower in the family.
I bought a 7.5 because I wanted Ultegra and a carbon base bar. (Which I am sure that I will NEVER notice the difference from the 7.0).
The wheels on the 7.8 didn't excite me enough to spend an extra $700.
I think the Omega brake is cool looking, but I need to start riding this damn thing and stop buying presents for it.

I picked the 7 because it was a better fit and it saved some money for better wheels and other fun stuff. I bought a 7.2 (I think) but yanked the groupo for SRAM Red. I also got a professional dynamic fit to know what to buy, and another fit once I got the bike and started to dial it in. I added a 3T Brezza with a -17stem and just added the omega brake. I suspect the bike is just a bit less aero than a 9, but not by much and I know I am on the bike... based on the positions of some others I have seen on the 9 series.
