Shy Giants - IMC history

Stumbled across the Shy Giants story as told by Lynn Van Dove and found it worth sharing:

"The site will consist of several episodes telling the story of Ironman's "Aloha Years", between 1978 and 1990, when Ironman was “more than just a race”. The site will tell the story from Hawaii to Canada to Japan and beyond, but with particular focus on Ironman Canada. Each episode will feature video, photos, text and documents. The aim is to create a record of the organizational and inspirational contributions of a number of key women in the creation and development of ultra-distance triathlon."

Really puts into perspective how much has changed since the early days, and the pervasive affect of the politics surrounding the old IMC.

Edit: apparently, politics are alive and well as LVD is going after SK over on the IMC Facebook page.

Some good stories and GREAT photos of the Ironscape back in the 80s, when everyone looked like Brad Cochrane (AKA, "Ironbrad.")

Indeed! My favorite section:

THE ALOHA YEARS: IRONMAN CANADA, 1986-91. Penticton's little race became Canada's big Ironman in 1986. For the next five years, Ironman Canada strove to bring a touch of Kona to the Okanagan—and a touch of Canada to the worldwide Ironman phenomenon

I was there as an impressionable 17yo spectator in '88, and this brings back good memories of the pioneers of our sport.

I just read the FB thread. Good grief. Whatever happened to the days of picking up a phone to hash out a disagreement?

No kidding. A bull in a china shop. Wow. Must be something about getting older. You don;t give a sh** about being nice anymore and politely expressing your disappointment and displeasure. She should like the 6 year old complaining about something she didn't get.

From what I could tell, it's not like she was slandered. She was simply excluded for some reason. Given her attitude on FB, perhaps it was on purpose. There;s likely more to this story.

There is. Jim Gourley alludes to it in his Ultra book and the chapter on Penticton. I live here now the past 3 years. Read this FB stuff and just laughed. Typical Penticton. My town is really good at building big issues out of shit no one cares about.

No doubt these people were instrumental to growing the sport, but their time has passed. The website has some good photos and interesting tidbits but by and large is incredibly boring; and Ironman Canada @ Penticton is now nothing more than a footnote in a sport that has passed it by. So I thought I would check out the IMC Facebook page for the amusement of people arguing about a race that no longer even exists, but Ironman Canada only comes up as the Whistler website. Is there another one that out there about the good old days in Penticton?

...don't stop believing, don't stop believing...

Gonna come back, some day!

Maybe as a rebrand, perhaps "Iron Person?" {circa 1982}
