Shoe Tread Wear Question

Reply
OK..stupid question (as most things I ask are) -- why does the black outer sole on my running shoes wear out -- go bald, wear in the heels or toe...in less than 500 miles -- but I can get 50000 miles from a set of car tires??
Yes..I know, different rubber compounds -- but why dont running shoe companies make a more durable outer sole????
FWIW I run in Asic Gel Kayano's -- yea, a heavy shoe but the work for my crippled knees...
Just wondering....

I've never had a pair of shoes that wore out - even close to it - before I was ready to change the shoes... I typically change out my shoes every 500km, as the cushioning wears out. To the casual observer, they still look quite new... drives my wife nuts - I'm the only one who knows which one of the identical pairs of shoes laying around are still for running, for rain running, for walking/shopping/errands/etc or have been relegated to yardwork... I think there are 6 pairs in my house right now...
As for the wear - the tire is much thicker, much heavier and much more rigid...the same compound in a show wouldn't give you the same level of flex and bio-metric feedback. Also, it is in the show companies' interest for your shoes to wear out... :)

Tires are heavy, when you step you scrape the bottom of the shoe, and they're supposed to break down along with the cushioning so you know when to replace. Plus, you know, they don't make money if you only have to buy a pair of shoes every 2 or 3 years.
That being said, just slap some shoe goo on them after ~100 miles. I've got about 4,000 miles on a happy old pair of XC flats I've had since high school.

My wife wears Kayanos and I can't believe how quickly the soles wear through. She wears through the black layer in a few months running 15 miles per week and she's a flyweight. I think it's specific to the Kayanos, and the cynic in me says it's bult in obsolescence. I always wear Asics (ranging from 1160, 2160, DS Trainers and Speedstars), and I have never worn through shoes the way my wife gets through the Kayanos.

cost of "hardening" the rubber
longer lasting shoe = less purchased
more injuries due to broken down midsole cushioning but rubber outsole still looks good to run in

Interesting topic. I think there are a couple reasons behind the tire tread vs shoe tread durability issue. For starters, the thicker the tread, the heavier it will be. Shoe designers use light weight tread that does not last very long. Imagine your running shoe tread on a car and how soft it is. Also, shoe companies want you to buy new shoes (just like tire companies want you to buy new tires) so they try to make sure the product does not last for too long.

Correct. Forget about the outsole. If your outsole is worn out then it is very likely that your midsole is totally cactus.

Perhaps you may want to have someone check out your gait. I wore out shoes very fast until I worked on getting my bad heel dragging under control.

The Asics Kayano is a great shoe no question. But I do have some gripes. The AHAR+ outsole which is a manufactured and patented rubber that asics has incorporated into all of their shoe models is rather durable, provided a non-pronator uses it. However when someone pronates, like you have described that AHAR is stressed in a manner that isn't ideal, at least in my opinion. That mixed with the gel creates a section of depressed foam and that foam gets over compacted. I'm surprised that as a pronator you can get 500 miles out of these shoes. I'd love to see pictures.
Brooks and Mizuno have used something I find to be much more resilient and consistent in wear called blown rubber. Yes it is more expensive to make, but the durability is unsurpassed. I'd highly suggest that you try out the Mizuno Inspire or the Brooks Adrenaline. Both are really great shoes and extremely comfortable. The blown rubber is expected to have a 20% lower wear rate and last longer than most competitors offerings.

I destroy the soles of my shoes (big time heel-striker)
I use Shoe-goo and put a patch of it on my heels every couple of runs.. it wears off quick, but at least I don't get a big wedge worn away quickly. (sacrifice the shoe-goo for the shoe rubber).
PS - I use Asics 2170

I normally tear up the inside of shoes by 600 miles anyway so having much more than that on the outsole would be useless.

Brooks Glycerin -- After 500 miles the inside of my shoes look immaculate(99% sock runs). The uppers and sides look great. The forefoot looks barely worn, but the outside section of the left heel is wearing into the foam. V8 of the Glycerin seem to wear faster than V2-V7. Hopefully they fixed this problem in V9.
Swim - Bike - Run the rest is just clothing changes.

Same here. The inside of the heel on my shoes is always first to go. Part of that my be the way I put them on, and take them off but I have always worn out the inside of my shoes with the outside still looking good.

I'm finding this thread interesting.
I train in Brooks (Ravena + Ravena 2). The tread wore out very quickly on both (mostly in the mid/fore foot), but there is plenty of life left on both shoes. My Ravenas have over a thousand miles on them, and they feel awesome.
I guess I just don't have the fine feel for sole degradation that would lead me to replace my shoes after the small number of miles it takes to wear out the tread.
I have wondered if there's some science to evaluating tread wear patterns to identify if a person has any opportunities to improve their gait/footfall when running.

Inside heel for me too, when I start to get a hole there it's time for new ones.
Seems about every shoe too, flats to every day shoes.
