Sedona, AZ HS track
I’m in Sedona for the week and I’m running a marathon this Sunday. Tomorrow I’d like to do 7 miles w/3 in the middle around goal pace/effort. I see that the local HS has a track - anyone know if it’s fenced in or locked up when not in use? I’m staying near Bell Rock and there isn’t much flat around here. I’ve run on the trails the past two days, and I’d like to go run at the track, but don’t want to waste the drive if it won’t be open. I was thinking of running around 6:30 am tomorrow morning.

Thanks!

Sadly, the H.S. track is locked almost all the time. It used to be open, but for what ever reason they put an end to that. I think Wednesday morning it's open. So, if you want to run flat and soft surfaces, your best option is to drive over to Cottonwood (30 minutes from where you are). Go to Dead Horse State Park (entry fee is a few bucks). Run on the flat soft paths around the lakes in the park. I do it all the time. It's a nice 22 or three mile loop depending on how you work it. Grab a map at the entry gate. That's going to be your best option for a fartlek workout off the technical trails in Sedona.

Thanks for the response!

I ended up going to the track yesterday morning on the early side. It was dark and I jumped the fence, then as it got lighter I realized a gate above the bleachers was open. Didn't have to hop the fence on my exit!

Goal is 3:00 or under, but the current forecast is low 40’s, wind of 15-25 mph, and a steady rain. I’ll have to just take it mile by mile and tuck in whenever possible to try avoiding the wind.
