Scuba diving and HIM racing
How many days before a goal race would it be safe to scuba dive and assume that an athlete could still perform at their best?

I have read some things about decompression illness that makes me a bit concerned.

Anyone have any experience with this?

I have not done much diving before races, but I would suggest 48 hours.
If you are diving long or deep, then longer.
I am sure there is someone more qualified than I to give you a better answer. Check a dive book or table.

Really depends on the dive and depth. I would not do two deep dives the day before a half. Easy shallow shore dive? Sure. There is some eividence for excercise caused DCS due to exertion shortly after diving

Performing vs potential for DCS are two different things though

2 days and you should be fine. Just increase your hydration some before your dive and I would also dive Nitrox if you can.
