I can't imagine that GoPro has not offered to mount every pro bike at Kona with cameras to record what is going on during the bike leg at Kona. It would make for interesting content to build show clips from. Those pros who are here on ST, did one of the following happen:
Would be curious to know where things are. In other sports we have direct vehicle/helmet mounted camera angles which are pretty good and make the action interesting. Watching triathlon is like watching paint dry, but being able to ride "on the pro bikes" could change that feeling, especially if we can toggle between bikes of various competitors in a "live mode"
The next step in the evolution would be cameras feeding their steam off the camera on the bike to the cell phone tower which we can pay to access and pick whose bike we want to "ride on" during the race. It's just a few software modules away (well that and proper 4G coverage on the QueenK and a suitable built in LTE or future LTE advanced modem in the camera). It seems that the Kona race would be more suited for 4G network based coverage because the course is known and the same every year. You could apply some of the same concepts to the Tour de France, but the 4G coverage is going to suck for large parts of the course. I guess it could be available for select stages where the action will be high and wireless coverage known.
- GoPro offered to mount your bikes with cameras, but you guys voted against it due to additional drag or not wanting what you are doing being recorded
- You guys went to GoPro to do this, but they did not want to (hard to think this would happen)
- No one from either side discussed this yet
- Against USAT/WTC rules but not enough time to get the rules changed
