Running with the Kenyans, part 3
hi everyone -

i think i've posted a few times about my adventures in kenya this year - i'm working in eldoret, on the edge of the rift valley. it's also home to a lot of the best distance runners in the world.

i've signed up for the local half marathon - though so has eliud kipchoge, so a win might be tough. i've been sick, busy with work, and generally distracted lately, so i figured a proper boot camp was in order.

i've come up to Iten, it's at about 2400m altitude and is where most of the local and international teams have their camps. i'm now halfway through a slightly modified kenyan itinerary of 2/3 runs per day, as follows:
friday evening: 6-7k moderate before dinner

saturday morning - 20k long and easy
saturday midday - track session, 10k total
saturday evening - 5-6k moderate

sunday morning - might actually go 7-8k moderate
sunday midday - quality - either pace work or long

the meals are all terribly healthy - lots of carbs (rice, pasta, veg) and a little big of meat, usually as a little stew. dessert is fruit. and always lots of milky tea.

all sorts of embarassingly fast people around; exactly 1 other white dude and 2 ethiopians. generally they're quite focused on the run, but friendly enough. running has so much currency here that the locals all want to check out your stride and your gear and say hi.

fun times.

Good thing none of them (or few) can swim and ride.
Of course a little challenge to them, on your end would be interesting.

Can you post some pictures from your escapades over there?

yeah, for the sake of my ego i'm trying to really hold on to the idea that i could out-swim these guys.

actually have seen people riding here - one whole team out for a (motorbike-escorted) ride yesterday, though they looked local.

not sure i'd really want to ride too much there, though - roads aren't great and the drivers are nuts.

He will probably only get a rear view.
And if he does a selfie, there will be no one behind him.
(at least that's what would happen to me)

yeah! i don't really carry a camera or phone when i run, here. and as you've noted, there wouldn't be much to take pictures of. i was at kamariny 'stadium' (it's a dirt track. . . that sometimes has sheep grazing in the middle) last weekend, and got a picture, but it's no better than anything you'd find online.

i had a better visit there a few months back with my wife - she got a few shots of me running, but better yet i got some of her doing some impromptu lessons with a bunch of little kids beside the track. much cooler. . .

You have to do it on a track session, no one will know that when they are behind you, that they are about to lap you...
