I moved from Newtons (don't remember which ones...) to Altra Ones a few years ago. Couldn't be happier. The Ones are my favorite running shoe ever. Great fit and right amount of cushioning for me. Perhaps not as durable as I'd like but couldn't rec them enough.

I think the Escalante would probably be a little closer to your cushioning experience in the Distance Elite.
