Roof Rack Question
I recently upgraded my wheels and now I am wondering if Yakima makes a strap to hold an 85mm wheel in place? I have a Yakima roof rack with a Viper fork mount to hold my bike and it has worked well when transporting my bike with a 65mm wheel on but with my new wheels the strap is just little too short to reach. If they do not make one are there other ways to secure the rear wheel while driving around with the bike on top of the car? Or should I just suck it up and put my box rim on the bike when I transport it on my car? Any input would be appreciated.

I would think a generic velcro strap might do, or you could get those strong rubber ties with metal clips that hold pairs of skis together, might be just the right size.

Two wheels good. Four wheels bad.

Yakima probably isn't going to have anything for you.
I use a Surly Junk Strap to keep my rear wheel on my fatbike in place on my Thule roof tray. Stays in place and does the job well.

You can get extra long straps for at least some models. I haven no experience with them though.

I just use a generic velcro strap that is slightly elastic, couple bucks at any home store.

What kind of wheels do you have? If it's a carbon fairing vs structural carbon I'd use the box rim up there.

I've used a Titan Strap I got from Cabelas for my fat bike. Rock solid.

I have a Flo 90 rear and also use a longer Velcro strap, works just fine.

I have Williams 85 clinchers, for long trips I'll travel with my box rim, but for when I need to make a quick local trip with the bike Ill probably go get a velcro strip.

I'm a chicken and I put my trainer wheel on the roof rack :|

Also makes it less attractive for thieves (even though it is locked).

Just for people reading this, as someone also just pointed out, this is not recommended.

It may work but I believe flo has posted specifically stating not to do this.

I have the same wheel and always use my training wheel. Not worth potentially cracking the fairing.

Not being a smart ass, genuinely concerned...

1) Can you point out where/what they said?
2) I'm no aero genius, but I can't imagine why it would be an issue.

I have a Seasucker Mini Bomber, they provided a longer strap and stated a large amount of their customers use it.

We do not recommend that. The carbon fairing is not structural and you could damage the fairing or crack the carbon/aluminum bond. Just FYI.
