Rip me a new one: front end tidy up pic Quote | Reply

Other than the front brake which on my 'bang for the buck aero' scale won't get my money just yet....anything else I can do to clean it up? Please be brutal if I have missed something in my aero geekdom, but don't knock my old timer clock in the background it is an heirloom passed down from my sweet little gramma!

*And yes I just noticed I have still yet to scrape off the little tribal freak sticker left on by the ebayer I bought the Kilo from....comes off tonight!

Fan works better when actually pointed at you!

BTW, where did you get it, the fan that is?

Can't remember as I've had it 20 years or so, but the general name is a 'hassock' fan. Sears maybe? Might have misspelled but it's amazing at circulating the air in my home during the day when I'm gone. I point it up and leave it on and it keeps my a/c way down....hardly runs at all with the bad boy on. The 'box' style fans are just way too loud for me. This fan is so powerful it will start break dancing across the floor when pointed forward it's insane.

Thanks.

I just had my cable re-worked when I had my fitting a few weeks ago. I have a Slice, so, no behind the stem cable routing like the super bikes. What my mechanic did for the front was actually route the front brake cable over the stem (along with the rear cable also) so that I really only have a vertical drop of cable coming down to the front brake and none under the bars.

Captain obvious here: You only have one shifter. Do you run a single chainring in front? Perhaps a bar end plug is better than empty if so. Otherwise looks pretty tidy.

I see you are already going full-on aero and removing the front shifter. You could also stand to gain an additional 0.01s/km by removing the rear shifter as well.

I have messed around with over the stem, but was never able to get the cable to slide smoothy no matter how much the cables were lubed. If the turn was too tortuous I just found it gave the cables a chance to get 'sticky'.

Yea I live in Florida.....I mean I seriously only use my small ring to take the wheel off. Top that off that I use about 3-4 cogs at most....single ring. Has nothing to do with 'aero geekdom' I have ridden single ring tt rigs on almost every tt rig I have had the past 25 years.

I have my hands clasped together around the front so basically all you see is the tip of the shifter sticking out from between my fingers. Does look like a reverse air dam of sorts at rest though I agree!

How much time are you spending riding with your hands out on the brakes? They look nice and cushy, but those big cushy things are bangin' into the wind all the time. Take 'em off and if you're afraid of your hands slipping off when you reach for the brakes, a little tennis racket grip tape will fix that right up in a far more aero fashion.

As for front brakes and aero "bang for your buck," the Omega isn't really all that expensive and it would clean up what's left quite a bit.

As regards running a single chainring front, be sure it's a chainring designed to be run as a single (it'll have longer teeth so it's less likely for the chain to bounce off -- which can and does happen).

Thanks man I didn't expect to have one the premiere aero gurus chime in!

I have been running a single ring for the better part of 25 years and have yet to drop a chain. I think that is largely due to what you pointed out, using the right ring. I use single speed chain rings, but also have an old 8 speed derailleur I cut the back end of the cage off with and slammed down to use as a last resort 'poor man's chain catcher'. 10's of thousands of miles w/o a dropped chain yet...knock on wood. The day I need small chain ring living down here is the day I hang it all up!

Good point on the Felt cushy's and seriously I had no idea they were a drag issue. Will tackle that immediately.....they came with the base bar and levers when I bought them from an ST'er. I'm on the hoods only when necessity demands it so no need for them. I have used skateboard deck tape historically and will go back to that.

Omega. Meh.......might do it but for now I'm working on the engine more and will reward myself with a treat like that after I hit some goals.

does that open end on the bars whistle over 30mph?
can you make it play a tune?
perhaps drilling a set of holes in the left aerobar and alternatively covering and opening them with your fingers could provide some entertainment to fellow cyclists?

Hey bobby I updated the tidy up cable pic above....still more work? Aero brake at some point for the fun of it, but just trying to make sure I took care of the low hanging fruit. Thanks man.

Is the "aero or die" bar setup an option for you? It's a bit extreme for some but you seem to have plenty of years on a tt bike.

I have been looking for a 100K bar for maybe 2 years? Would love to get that going, but tripping over a set of those bars is like finding weapons grade plutonium on the sidewalk while cruising the Gaza Strip:/

It looks to me like you've got the low-hanging fruit.

I must say, those are some FAT fork legs. Something to consider for down the line, in addition to the Omega, might be something like an after-market 3t Funda fork.

Overall, though, I love it! After owning a couple of "superbikes" over the last couple of years, I'm really learning to admire the simplicity of an old-school setup like this. I've been racing a very old P3 aluminum most of this summer. It seems to be plenty fast for most courses and it's just so hassle-free. I get where you're coming from.

Thanks for this thread. I used it to clean up my P1 front a little. Do you have the before pic?

Great thanks man if it passes your aero-ometer that's good 'nuff for me. It's so funny you bring that up about the fork b/c you are maybe the 3rd person to say that. I don't think I would ever spend another dime on this thing.....7 year old QR Kilo. If my bike had a name....maybe 'SimpletonofST'? Thanks again for the critiques.

Dig you still have a P3alum...I sold my P3SL to NYSLIM about 2 years ago. Wish I had never done that! Still peruse for one, but they are not easy to find.

I had a Shimano PRO Synop bar with clip ons and some Felt Tri Tip grips. Re-routed my rear brake housing on the drive side and paired with rear shift housing/zip ties.....voila they disappeared. Like a big dummy I deleted the old pic and dropped the new one in so not able to do a before and after.

It's hard to see in your pic, and this may not matter either way, but how much extra brake cable hangs down from your brakes? Mine has about 1.5" and wondering if I should trim it.

I actually trim mine down to a nub, just enough to get a crimp secured and there is maybe 5mm behind that? Don't need to go that close per se, but aero geekness is just fun for me.
