Rev3 Maine Question
Hey ST,
Just read the athlete guide of Rev3 Maine. Little question for you folks as this is my first Rev3 experience (always raced WTC events before)... Is it mandatory to wear your bib number during the bike portion? (It's not written anywhere that wearing bib when on the bike is mandatory).

Thanks advance!
David

For USAT races, your bike number is your official number for the bike. Your bib number is your official number for the run.

WTC races used to require that you wear your bib number on the bike, but not any more.

If an individual race still requires a bib number on the bike, they should explicitly spell it out in the athlete's guide and pre-race meetings.

Not that I remember. However:

1. Don't forget mandatory Saturday bike check in in transition.
2. Old Orchard Beach will be a zoo by 10:30 or 11;00 am if it's a sunny day. Park/plan accordingly.
3. Road course is mostly uphill out, downhill back. As you get further from town the road conditions deteriorate. Not awful, but keep your eyes open.
4. Swim is cold. Damn cold. But with a wetsuit and salt water, you'll feel like you're on top of the world! Take the warmup time in the morning before your wave to acclimate, lest the water temp suck your breath away on the run in.

I've loved every Rev3 event I've done, and Maine is one of my favorites, as I drag children and wife along and they can stay suitably amused while I suffer.

Hit the Maine Diner for a lobstah roll when you're done. And an Allagash.

Good luck!

Ben

I swam and road the bike course last Saturday. I live in Cape Elizabeth, no the area well.

Swim - the water feels cold at first but seems warmer this summer than last. Highly recommend getting in the water before the start to acclimate for a min, swim a bit and be ready for the start. The biggest challenge seems to be sighting once your are swimming parallel to the shore - sun will be in your eyes. The swim will be taking place about 90 mins after low tide, so you will feel a bit of current going out but it will help you coming in. Usually conditions are good in the morning, maybe a few small waves early. Note there is a LONG run from the swim exit to T1. So don't plan on any 2 min transitions here, more like 5-6 mins. Also, no wet-suit strippers so it may be wise to take it off right at waters edge.

Bike - a couple of points. Have your bike in an easy gear in T1, once you come out you will have a few short hills to climb. You will negative split this bike course. You have some rollers early, then flat then more rollers, at about mile 23 to mile 40 is where you will make up time. So first 23 miles you will be under pace, next 17-19 over pace, and then the last 13-15 you will average pace. So if you don't ride with power, but aware and know if you wanting to average say 20 mph, don't freak out if an hour into the bike your only 18-19 miles into the course. In my opinion, the course is short. I measured it right at 55 miles. I figure this is pay back from the very long transition from swim to bike. The road conditions will vary from newly paved to dangerous. On the rough patches, please pay attention, there are ruts. Maine countryside is beautiful, the roads not so much.

Run - I haven't done the full 13 mile run but have run on the marsh before. The course leaves town and looks to be about 1/3rd roads and 2/3rd off roads (marsh, Eastern trail) The marsh is a off road path, fairly flat and good running surface.

Looking forward to the event.

Going for my first time and bringing the family (4yo and 7yo), doing the little rev race the day before.
Will be my first real ocean swim, so a tiny bit nervous about that, but otherwise looking forward to it.
We are getting there mid-day Friday, and don't really plan to drive anywhere. Staying at the host hotel on the beach, so hopefully no concerns about traffic, etc. :)

The water will be colder than what they have listed on the tourism website. Just get in early and warm-up. If the start gets delayed, get back in the water and get used to it. Once you get going you won't know the difference. Last year it was REALLY calm. Of course it is the ocean and has the potential to get rough but it is what it is. It is a pretty nice swim. Oh and don't sweat the long run to T1. They will give you a shoe bag if you want it but shoes were really unnecessary last year. They had the road very, very clean from the swim to T1.

I had a great race huge pb shortish course notwithstanding. Water was calm, warmer than last year, light winds and air temperature not too hot. The roads weren't that bad, certainly better than what I train on! The race shirt and hat and medals were all nicer than last year IMO. I also thought the race expo was better this year. Volunteers were awesome traffic was handled well, bike course got a bit congested when the half and oly merged but not awful. Really nice venue, hope to do the race again next year.

Edit: big shoutout to Jonnyo coaching!

The conditions were ideal - calm ocean, light winds, but I did get a bit hot on the run, ended with cramps. I am convinced the bike course is one mile short. I asked another guy and he said he had 56 miles, I had 54.8.

I recommend the event, good value.

I had a blast! I did the half.
25:17 swim
2h23 bike (though as some of you said I also do think it is a little bit short)
1h40:15 run. Fade to 3rd overall to 9th between mile 4 to 13. 1st 20-24 (I'm 20). Really happy with my progression through the season (and the last week (2 half in a week).

Also won the worst wetsuit contest from Blueseventy at the Expo! (I'm still waiting for their email concerning the details on how to get the wetsuit)

The swim was awesome. Water temperature was not bad at all, very comfortable. The bike had some rough parts around mile 40-45-50, just keep your eyes open and grip your aerobars. The run was hot but comfortable enough (not as hot as Eagleman, that was hell). The shower truck was a very good idea from Rev3. Only downside is the post-race food that was not as great as WTC events (aka Tremblant 70.3 or Timberman last week with their awesome BBQ chicken) ;). I highly recommend this event. Best family friendly event to date.

Went very well. First race since April due to ITB issues.

OD: Swim seemed fast, or short. I swam 19:30, in talking to Bobby Hammond (16yo, 4th OA, first out of the water), he swam low 16:xx and normally swim around 17:00, so I'd guess it was about 30-45" fast, which sounds about right - I am right around a 20:00 1500m swimmer.

T1 was long, but anticipated.

Bike course was good, basic out and back, with some rollers and turns. The roads weren't great, but I suppose that is to be expected in NE. I moved from ~6th to 1st, passing a US Pro Tri guy to take the lead with about 2 miles to go. Got a moto escort back into town, complete with lights and sirens. That was dope.

Run course was pretty well shaded, a bit rolly, but not bad at all. I didn't run fast, but at least managed to negative split it. Fell back to 6th OA, 1st 25-29 (technically 2nd, as timbikerun got 2nd OA and is in my AG). Just out of the money stings a bit. But happy for a first race off an injury.

I think the difference in swim times was because of low tide...that little sprint to the water helps your swim time.

Sucks about the cramps. Yeah it was warm though the forecast had me convinced it wouldn't be so I just ignored it :)

Yep, I got 54.7 I think. I think it works out fairly even time-wise though owing to the extra 800 m t1 run.

Nice, congrats!pretty much my experience as well except winning the AG win thing ;)

You don't really need that wetsuit though swimming 25:17, maybe, pass it on to a deserving moper?

Nice work out there! Great for a comeback race.

I did the half. Was a breakthrough race for me, chopped twenty minutes off my HIM pr. Slow 34:xx swim which I had coming for my <20,000 yds swim training in 2014. Bike was as fast as I wanted to go but at 15 w below my power target. So more bang for less buck :) . I came in at 2:26. Coming from the dead middle of e swim pack it felt fast :) . I ran pretty conservatively as I could smell the sub 5:00 by then. Target was 7:30 pace and I ran 7:40s. At mile eight I gave myself permission to start kicking it down a bit, I think I was at 7:10 by the end. That netted me negative splits and a few last minute age group kills. 13th AG 40-44, 31st oa, a great result for me. Probably no more 20 minute prs at this distance for me so I'm going to bask in this one for a while ;)

As you said conditions were great.

It was a pretty nice course. I think Lobsterman has OOB beat as far as the swim and bike go, but the run out on the marsh was beautiful. Coming out of the trees to wide open views of the marsh was the highlight of the course. There were also some freshly paved, slightly down hill sections on the bike that were nice and fast.

That was my first experience with Rev3 and I thought they did a great job. The production level was on par with any big event I've done while managing to maintain the local race vibe.

I hope to be back next year.
