1. No wetsuit.

2. Can become FOP in 2 sports instead of FOP in 1 and MOP in 2.

3. Socks.

4. No disorientation after swim to bike.

5. No chance that I will be assaulted during swim.

6. No more smelling like chlorine.

7. No staggered starts.

8. Cheaper.

9. No more water logged chamois pads.

10. No chance that I will drown.

Unless you suck at running (I'm looking directly at me)

3. Socks.

5. No chance that I will be assaulted during swim.

Mostly because no one signs up, comparatively speaking

8. Cheaper.
Not true where I'm from

9. No more water logged chamois pads.
Don't you sweat while running?

10. No chance that I will drown.
Me either

Nah. Just an indestructible complex from being in the water for so many years. I don't even think that drowning is an option. I'm sure some it's idiotic, but I'm significantly more concerned about getting leveled by a car while biking or running than having something happen to me in water. Even in the worst of surf and the most aggressive of triathletes.

1. No wetsuit.

That's only a bonus because the reason I don't need a wetsuit is I don't have to swim... which is the real bonus.

2. Can become FOP in 2 sports instead of FOP in 1 and MOP in 2.

For me, it's more like MOP in 1 and BOP in 1... but that still eliminates waaay BOP in 1.

3. Socks.

Agree.

4. No disorientation after swim to bike.

Not familiar with that one.

5. No chance that I will be assaulted during swim.

I'm safe there regardless. I'm so far behind in the swim that the only way they could assault me would be if they did a second lap just for fun.

6. No more smelling like chlorine.

Not a concern. No pools where I live so it's lakes in the summer and no swimming in the winter.

7. No staggered starts.

Not enough people at the local event for that to be necessary.

8. Cheaper.

Locally, the entry fee is exactly the same for the triathlon and the duathlon.

9. No more water logged chamois pads.

Does sweat count as water?

10. No chance that I will drown.

Never considered that one, was too busy worrying about having a coronary in the run.

The downside is that while triathlons have "participants" duathlons have "competitors"

I agree with you on all points, and I get the disorientation after swimming thing. Duathlons are harder anyway. Triathlons are like an easy training day. If you swim as poorly as me you can't really overcook the swim, leaving you fresh legs on the bike and running off the bike is easier if you didn't kill your legs on the first run.
Don't hurt me.

Funny, I've been thinking about going back to duathlon from triathlon for all of the same reasons (I despise swimming). Checking my results for this last year, I would have taken first in my age group at one event and definitely top 10 in the others. As opposed to my current standings which is loser to bottom 1/3.

Yeah! All you strong runners should drop triathlons for duathlons so us FOP swimmers don't have to lead all race just to get annihilated on the run! Kona here I come!

Love duathlons, mainly because I suck at swimming (which in turn is because I hate pool swimming, and don't live near any viable open water).

Wish there were more of them around. Also wish they had a bit more name recognition. I don't race for glory (just as well given my results) but at least when vaguely interested colleagues/friends/family ask about what races I've done and I say 10k/marathon/ironman/olympic tri, etc they know what I'm talking about, when I say duathlon they generally just go "huh?" and I then have to explain it.

And the Powerman series is back in the USA!!

I'd rather drown once than run twice.

Kidding. Duathlons rock....especially in the Northern states where there are no local tri's until late May but the Du's start in April.

Duathlons can use great, rural venues as you aren't limited by lack of swimmable water.

True, but finishing is another story. I am a triathlete but did 4 du's this year including PM Zofingen. The DNF rate in the World Championship division was 15% and the DNF rate in the Open Division was 19%. It was damn hard but was definitely one of the greatest race experiences of my life.

I hear you there. I had a hard time myself. Maybe an easy ticket to punch, but you still need to work hard to get that finishers medal!

Transition set up is a breeze.
Option to wear socks if needed.
T1 is lightning quick.
Don't need to get to transition so early.
No wetsuit means easier to make that last minute porta-potty run.
