Racine 70.3 may not be wetsuit legal...

....never even thought that would be possible.
Local news (Chicago station) reported Lake Michigan water temp is 80*. air temps all week will be in the mid - high 80's, so it isn't like it will cool down much.
Should be interesting....

They should reverse the wetsuit rules, rather than having wetsuits not be legal if temps are too hot, they should only be legal if temps are too cold....

The thing about lake Michigan is within a day the temp can change like 10 degrees based on wind and temperature. I swim just north of Chicago so it might be different that far north but I'd be happy with a non wetsuit swim! And I'm not even a swimmer.

That is not the way Lake Michigan works. The lake could turnover and be 55 tomorrow.

^^ this one. Read up on great lake limnology if you need more info....
Also, the water at North Beach was 59 as of last Friday... I don't quite believe that.

EDIT: this is much more believable-- 72 degrees according to MSU:

Racine area water is always the coldest part of the lake. I guarantee you its not 80 at North Beach. Maybe low 70s.

The lake has been great this year. Its been in the 70's for most of the last three weeks. Its very possible that Racine, Steelhead and the Chicago Triathlon will all be wet-suit ineligible. Though it is also true that 76 today could be mid 60's tomorrow.

No chance. You are more likely to have hypothermia cases than no-wetsuit at that race.

Not sure where you are getting that information from, but according to the official City of Racine water temperature measurements, the waters temps at North Beach have been below 60 pretty much all of July

I'm pretty sure these temps from refrigerated samples mean to assess water quality (not lake surface temperature)... All other signs point to the temp at North Beach being in the 72ish range (just like last year). As a phd student at an oceanographic institute (though not an oceanographer myself), I'm a bit struck at the lack of available surface temperature data. Closest in situ temp reading (at least available on the tubes) is a bouy due east from Racine. Just GLCFS model results for coastal temps, which given the 14 degree range over the past 3 days of 3hr model outputs, I don't believe. :/
With that, I'm off to run so I don't embarrass myself next week

Ahh...thanks for clarifying...so with all that said, given your expertise, in simple terms, with where we are at now and ambient temps between 75 and 90 with good sun over the next week, what does your crystal ball say to the million dollar question?

I'd be surprised if water temps go up above 76 by Sunday. Or maybe that's just wishful thinking for this non-fish. But seriously, bring your wetsuit.

I swam the course last Saturday which was after several +100 degree days and the water was cold - not sure what the water temp was but it felt like 60's.

Temps all depend upon wind direction, if the winds are out of the east, all the warm surface water stacks up on shore and really raises the temps. I've paddle board surfed Lake Michigan in September with no wet suit when the winds are out of the east. Typically the prevailing winds blow towards Michigan, that's why their beaches are blessed with warmer water for most of the summer. If I had to guess Lake Michigan will be wet suit legal since it will be SW winds for the next couple days, and that will turn over our shoreline, but those winds are also bringing the 90's to town for race day.

Lake Michigan also has some serious theromclines. It can very easily be in the low 70s in the first foot of water, then in the 60s below that. The race director will sink the thermometer pretty deep, I expect, to make sure wetsuits pass muster on race day. That said, I've never seen the temps so warm as I have this summer (I swim in the lake 2-3x/week). I've only used the wetsuit once so far this summer.
I'd say plan on wetsuits, but be prepared just in case. It's an easy, calm swim along the shore so being non-wetsuit legal should be no problem for anyone properly trained.
Best of luck to all racing! I'll be there to cheer you on!

Geez, my first thought when I read the subject line was "God forbid you have to race without a wetsuit!"
Then I read the post and regained my cool.

The site I use to check the temps of the lake shows it at 75 degrees in Racine. It should be wetsuit legal. I don't see it warming up much more this week.
