Racewalking?!?! Quote | Reply

How is it that triathletes have to totally bastardize our sport with drafting and a bunch of loops to make it "Olympic worthy", but walking effeminately for speed has two olympic events? They cancelled baseball but this is still an Olympic sport?

Apparently it was a very popular sport (and something to bet on) in the late 1800's that afforded the best competitors the equivalent of millions of dollars in earnings per year so they added it in the Olympics in 1906 thinking it would continue to be popular and they just never took it out. As people began to realize they could actually run that far, running took over in popularity. I do have to say, the world record of 1:17 for a 20k walk is impressive... but bizarre.

I like that there is a 50k event. That's pretty hardcore in itself.

How is walking not equally effeminate and masculine?

Have you ever watched racewalking? It's not dilly-dallying, as it appears you were implying with your sexist comment.

The record for the 50k is 3hr 34min. You try to run that. Go, try.

I don't disagree with your comments on walking, especially given the high number of disqualifications that occur during the races.

But please note, no-one in the rest of the world cares about baseball. Cricket is a way more popular game, not that I want to see that in the games either.

I can easily run it.

Walking it is mind bottling.

Couple things.

1. Effeminate refers to a male taking on traits that are considered more female. If I were being sexist, I would have said feminine. I suppose you could consider me sexist for excluding female participants from the statement.

2. When I used the word effeminate I was referring to the extreme pelvic rotation necessary in racewalking, not referring to a lack of effort. I also find this over exaggerated hip twist silly on female runway models, so again not sexist.

3. The world record for a Beer Mile is 5:09. You try that. Still doesn't mean it should be an Olympic sport. Though I would argue it would be better than racewalking.

I was specifically directing that toward the OP. I'm so happy you can "easily" run a 3:34, which is quite fast (and sure you already knew this), so congratulations! And that your mind is in a bottle.

I'll take up the arguement since I like the punishment.

Swaying your hips side to side to generate the power in the stride does look effeminate. Sorry, it does.

I can't walk nor run 50k, don't want to either. I can't figure skate, but I know that sequins and tight pants while twirling on the ice is effeminate too. Furthermore, I fully realize that shaving my legs, running around in spandex, and what looks to be a unitard is also VERY effeminate. None of which look masculine.

Power lifters are very masculine looking, women included.

I look effeminate compared to most olympians, including figure skaters.

I'm really not a baseball fan, I just used it for the precedence of sports being removed from the Olympics. I disagree that no one else in the world cares about baseball though. The Japanese love it, and many of the best players come from Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and other latin american countries.

You make a fine point, and I don't see an as an argument, nor do you deserve any "punishment."

I interpreted the OP's comment as "this should not be an olympic sport BECAUSE it looks effeminate." And I wondered why, and why he chose to declare race walking effeminate, when both men and women take on the same technique. Further, I don't see what is effeminate about it, as nobody, especially woman, walk around that way normally. In fact, the sport started as an all-male sport, so men were the first to develop the technique.

But then he provided his hip swaying-cat walk model argument, and now I'm clearly convinced.

I actually watched the US trials this year so have a bit more appreciation for it, although I still think they look dorky as fuck and wouldn't miss it if it were dropped from the Oly program (but then you could say the same about several other sports... and we do just that on several other threads here, so end tangent.) My biggest takeaway is that in running, you can take a momentary walk break (even if just at an aid station, not even talking a total breakdown) and then keep going, but in racewalking you can't really do anything other than keep walking. In fact, at the finish several of the competitors broke into a short trot to kind of 'jog out' the kinks... I could just imagine watching them how good that must have felt; I think my hips would feel worse racewalking 20K than my knees/back hurt running that far.

My point was never that it shouldn't be a sport because it looks effeminate. If that were the case, we'd have to chuck a whole lotta sports. I was just trying to describe racewalking in a funny way. In the same way people refer to golf as hitting a white ball and chasing it.

Honestly, I thought the reasons it shouldn't be an olympic sport were obvious. Its boring, subjective, has no fans, and is basically like seeing who can whisper the loudest.

Maybe Galloway should make a race walking program where they run through the aid stations.

Our very own Tetsuoni's brother is a world-class racewalker. http://www.racewalking.org/

It's not as easy as it looks. Maybe you should try it before you put it down.

I don't know if you came up with that, but bravo. Excellent image. I plan to borrow it repeatedly when discussing this sport.

Of course, I'm running at double the pace of these walkers, so it makes me feel even more pathetic. And if there's anything adolescene taught me, it's that if I feel bad about something, I should make fun of others to feel better.

OK now I'm actually thinking about this on a serious level, and I want to know more about why one might choose this technique over running. It occurred to me that my initial confusion was based on the idea "why not just run?" Then realizing they have to have someone watch you constantly to see if you break form. Whereas, in running, just go - no one judges your form, you go from point A to B as fast as you can, and don't short the course. Done. It seemed stupid to race in a way that was not the optimum way to move. And then I realized there are four different swimming strokes, when freestyle is always fastest, so I killed my own argument right there.

I really don't want to spend any more time thinking about this topic now, until I'm passed by the next racewalker at a large running event. It will happen soon enough.

Racewalking has nothing to do with triathlon nor baseball. But I agree, racewalking is stupid. Those who can't run, walk. And as someone else said, the rules are subjective.

Baseball in the olympics was stupid also.

Mostly true. I won't discredit their athleticism, but it almost seems like the objective of racewalking is to cheat as much as possible without getting caught on that day by that judge.

Re: Racewalking?!?! [bnation] [In reply to] Quote | Reply

I experimented with it in college ;) . Extremely hard to go fast as you might imagine. My teammate needed a partner for a relay so he taught me how to do it a week or two out. We won handily even with my near dq and 3rd slowest time. I guess he was some national level guy or something.

Never really worried about the way it looked. Our team winning conference partly due to our racewalking points looked just fine.

Doesn't really make an arguement for it being or not being an Olympic sport though....

Useful for learning technique on how to run an IM. Certainly more to learn from them than chi/pose running techniques.
