Pro Triathlete Swim Camp - Magnolia Masters
Quote | Reply
A few months ago I decided to get as many pros together as possible for a month long swim camp in January in the Woodlands, Texas. We got a great response and have 10 pros attending the camp. We started yesterday and I will write a daily post about what we are doing and how the camp is progressing. If anyone has any questions, please let me know. You can find the first couple of posts here:

You should be able to find it under the "Swim Efficiency" tab on the site and the posts start below the articles and sample workouts. If you still can't find it, please let me know.

I'll have Day 4 posted tomorrow.

Tim - In reading through your posts, I noticed you have divided the professionals into 3 groups: sub-1:05 pace, sub-1:15, and sub-1:20 pace. When I first read this, I assumed you meant pace per 100 scy, and I thought "wow, some of those pro's are pretty damn fast". Then I read it a second time today and thought, actually, perhaps you were/are referring to pace for the 2.4 mi IM swim. So, which is it??? Are your fastest guys really doing 100s leaving on the 1:05, or???

Thanks,

Eric

I can't imagine any pro much north of 1:05 unless they are a VERY strong cyclist/runner. Likely scy pace times. Maybe not send-off, but average over a set with short rest?

Well, a number of pro men and women swim around 58:00 for the 2.4 mi, which is 1:22.4/100 yd for 4224 yd. This would imply going around 1:12 to 1:15/100 scy on 1:30 send-off. Certainly, the fast pro swimmers who go 47:00 for the IM swim (1:06.8/100 yd) are going more like 58 to 1:01 lvg on 1:10 or 1:15. If these fast guys were lvg on 1:05, i'd think they'd be coming in at 1:03-:04.

as a leave ON interval: 1:05 is very difficulte even for a 47-49min ironman guy. No way i would do more than a few repeats...

if we talk about 1:05 yard time as your core pace for 100s 200s 400s repeats etc...yes, that is front pack ironman and ITU. much more realistic. i m thinking Tim is refering to that.

What I meant was that there are few PRO swimming 1:05+ for the Ironman swim. I can't imagine ANY 1:10+. I also can't imagine someone targeting 2.4mi race pace for 100y intervals with 15s+ rest.

I think you overestimate the speed of a 47-49 Ironman swimmer. I doubt any do prolonged sets at <1:00/100 pace.

I'm sure Tim will get on and answer for sure but I can tell you this. I swam with Tim's regular morning group for much of last year, including with many of the pro's that are in this camp. The times he mentioned are for SCY intervals.

DISCLAIMER: I am not on this camp. I'm not pro nor am I fast enough for even the slow interval. About the best I can do these days when I'm in peak shape is a 1:25 SCY interval but I much prefer the 1:30.

Well, that's what i thought initially but leaving on the 1:05 means coming in at 1:00 or under, if you're going to sustain that pace for 10 or more repeats. That's pretty fast even for a sub-50 IM swimmer:)

There's at least one sub-50 IM (multiple times on legit courses) swimmer in that lane and I think one of the others is a sub-25 70.3 swimmer.

fairly educated guess that the pace, not send off, is 1:05.

IOW, the sub-1:05 pace group would be aiming to hit 1:05 or faster leaving on something like 1:15 or 1:20, the sub-1:15 aiming for 1:15 or better on 1:25 or 1:30, and sub-1:20 lvg on around 1:30/35. This makes sense:)

I'm referring to their pace per 100scy. We've got a couple of the pros here that are sub 48 without a wetsuit and one of them that was on the U.S. Open Water National Teams for the World Champs at 25k.

With that group we did do a set of 100s on Monday at a 1:10 interval at the end of a 3000 yard set.

Any other questions, let me know.

Should have Day 4 and Day 5 posted shortly. They have been keeping me busy.

Ya, that makes perfect sense now; i guess i'm just more used to seeing lanes designated by the "leave on" interval.

JD mentioned to me that they did a morning swim with:

2x
15x100 on 1:25, holding 63's

Then an afternoon set of 2x 10x100 on 1:25, again holding 63's.

This was the second fastest group swimming there, so I imagine John K and a few other's were holding sub 60 pretty easily there.

+++

Looks like a fun camp with about 45k each week. However not much time for quality cycling or running, so racing best be a ways away.
