Pooley is coming...
Emma Pooley is retiring from pro cycling to concentrate on triathlon. I'll be interested to see how she does now she can dedicate herself to triathlon training! Cycling's loss, our gain.

She won the inaugral Swissman (think Norseman, but with cheese), not sure that she had to swim particularly well to do it though... Interesting interview about how she can earn more coming 3rd in a 70.3 (might have been Challenge Phillipines) than she ever won in Cycling. And did she come 5th in Zurich?

That's awesome. She's a great athlete and I'm looking forward to see how she does with a full focus on tri.

She comes from a tri background before cycling. Will be interesting to see what happens for sure.

Women's pro cycling is the one sport that makes women's pro triathlon look like an awesome paying career choice.

I think triathlon is also more gender equal (without insinuating there's no more room for improvement). Media coverage of female athletes is greater than women's cycling, maybe due to the individual nature of triathlon. We're intrigued by how an athlete went about their training, their trials and tribulations - something we can all relate to regardless of the pro athlete's gender. Women's cycling is still, unfortunately, a sideshow to the men's pro cycling. Look at Vos; If she were male, she'd be on the cover of every road cycling magazine, every month, with sponsors competing for her!

True that. A local woman (Ruth Winder) rides for UHC and rode with Mara Abbott last year when she won the Giro Rosa and this year also. Last year for WINNING what has to be one of the most important women's stage races Abbott won something like 400 Euros. The team split was enough for Ruth to pay for putting her bike on the plane home. Sad.

Here's the 2014 prize list.

she is no longer coming.
she came.

Just found that the actual distance is 9180m. So that would be a 37:24 for 10k at her pace. There's also 260 m of climbing and it's 55% unpaved plus she must have been pacing herself. Course record was 7:04 and she finished in 6:47. Not sure if it's the same course but Paula Newby-Fraser, Natascha Badmann and Erin Baker all won the race before so to be that much faster is ridiculous.

Just as a point of comparison, she did the women's Giro in the middle of her triathlon season this year, and won like 3 stages.

Marianne vos, Mara Abbott, all present.

She is crazy good.

Her swimming isn't good. until she fixes that to the tune of 4+ minutes she's in trouble at major races.

Eh? !!

4 minutes faster and he would have been on the podium this weekend, in 2nd (just). 5 minutes faster and he would have won.

Lionel Sanders disagrees with you!!

DD - (paraphrasing) - Emma is in trouble at major races unless she can fix her swim.

Me - Lionel Sanders disagrees with that statement (just to provoke DD).

Do you get it? Lionel Sanders DISAGREES that having a relatively poor swim means one is in trouble at major races given his great performance this weekend after being 4+ minutes down on the swim.

I think she has a pretty good chance of making up for a bad swim if it's not a crazy amount of time. I train the 2nd place woman from the race yesterday and while she was sick race week she's not a bad cyclist herself, placing 2nd behind Emma Johansson at our cycling nationals and being one of the better riders in long distance tri. Even if it's not always accurate to compare performances from a single race like that it seems like the ride and run Pooley did was quite special.
