Anyone else notice how high his head was during the relay. Seems if he had a lower head position he would be more hydronamic :0)

If his head was lower he'd slower....any faster and he'd be up in plane!

I noticed his hand was flexed almost 90 degree entering the water ready for the catch more so than the other swimmers.

Sometimes head up is faster in sprints. It drives the feet down, allowing the swimmer to get more power out of their kick. It's not sustainable for very long, so it's bad for longer events. I'm not saying that's fact, just something that's possible for some swimmers in some situations. At their level of performance, it's nearly impossible for me to tell what the hell is going on - it's simply awesome.

I noticed that too.
Considering he's just a tad faster than me, I'm going to try it out today.

I'll report back and let you guys know if this is the best way to be faster.......keep tuning in for further updates :)

On a side note: I REALLY hate listening to Bob Costas asking him about his form being poor considered to 2008. With a Silver, Silver, Gold (I think is the count as of now?), he really sucks for these Olympics.

Pay attention to the underwater shots, looking up at Phelps. On the surface it looks like he's got this weird, loping uneven stroke.

Underwater, well, that's where the real story is told.

I faint with awe.

Alot of people have this stroke. It gives you a little extra power at the expense of a little bit of technique. Works for some, not for others. Look at Cielo, he does it too in the 100 free, and he's the absolute best (as in, for the last 7 years, not necessarily taking him for tonight's final). Lots of people do it in the 400 free especially, not necessarily olympians, but it's extremely common on the college level. It's a perfectly valid stroke technique for those who get more power from it than they lose in technique.

Flan - Correct me if I'm wrong but I think you're saying his head is high because he's going fast enough such that his whole body incl head is riding very high in the water. Basically the faster you go the higher you ride in the water, just like a boat.

Phelps actually has a lot of "flaws". I was sitting in a seminar where a leading coach at the Olympic center was going over his stroke using the velocity meter and such. He ripped him apart...and it was easy to do....

Moral of the story...yes, swimming is highly technique dependent.....but it's not solely defendant on technique.

X1000 on this. Technique matters but but what matters most is swimming lots of moderately hard to hard workouts.

If you throw out the 1st race where there was something definitely wrong, he has swam really well. In the 400IM he did not even get close to his trial time, which would have been silver. So you cannot just say he was not in shape, he was more rested than weeks earlier and just had a bad day. He hardly ever has those, so we expect so much more from him than everyone else. That swim on the 400 free relay was the 2nd fastest of all swimmers, even factoring in the relay start, and i think pretty close to as fast as he has ever swam the 100.

Keep in mind that all of his records are from the suit era, so you cannot just compare his records to now. That 200 fly time of 1;53 flat was really fast, especially factoring in that he missed every turn and the finish. He was strong enough for a mid 1;52 but just had bad timing for some reason, and that is probably better form than his WR in the suit era. The same thing with his 200 free on the relay, one of the fastest times of everyone, and he had no pressure the entire race. He probably medals in the 200 if he swam it, but he did the smart thing and took that huge load out of his schedule to insure he had a good 100..

i see he as having really good form with one bad swim on the 1st day thus far. Maybe missed his taper and now is fine. It will be a great 200IM, as i think he gave up really early to lochte in the semis. And Lochte will have an incredible double that night with the IM being 2nd. I think Lochte is finally appreciating how hard a phelps like schedule really is..

Umm, great observations but you didn't address the OP's original question about Phelps' head position...:)

It's called "gallup". All the young swimmers are being taught it. All core power.
My plan? To start off easy, and then back off.
