Passing the time on the trainer
I know it's only September, but I'm planning ahead. :)

Last winter I watched a ton of movies...this year, I have a Playstation 3 (I know, I'm behind the times) and I'm trying to determine if it's possible to play a game while pedaling on the trainer. I guess I'll have to try it...my saddle's pretty level, so I should be able to do it.

What's your favorite trainer-coping media?

Movies, tv series, videos of bike courses, sufferfest videos... that's all I have off the top of my head. I plan on re-watching all of House and Breaking Bad this fall and winter while on my trainer.

The video game thing was nearly impossible for me. You either end up pedaling very slowly or not at all or playing your game very badly... then again I only experimented with the FPS genre. Perhaps other games are more workable. In any event, I doubt you'll be able to do anything besides Z1/Z2 work while playing a video game.

Yeah, that's my one concern: sacrificing my workout quality. Hmmmmm...

Just music. Pandora has been a nice change from the same old CD's. Sadly, I'm old enough to say that it beats cassettes, too

Porn would probably do the trick.

I have used a mix of TV and music. I DVR'd a bunch of Tri's and I have watched those over and over again. Something about that motivates me. I also have watched motivational-type movies. Usually around 5/6 hours, though, I just need the music and LOUD.

Sometimes my daughter will play in the basement and my wife hits the treadmill for her training so we can all talk and that helps.

I tried playing PS3 games while on the trainer but I sweated too much and couldn't pay enough attention to both at the same time. I also didn't like sitting so upright. Now that I have clip-on aerobars, I could play but there's still that sweat and attention thing. I've tried watching TV or movies but once again I don't pay enough attention. I do however pay attention when I watch cycling races and will totally focus if I give myself a handicap and try to beat the peloton to the finish.

I'm curious if I would do more indoor riding if I got one of those applications that plays videos of courses slower/faster based on your power/speed.

Are there any playlists out there for different cadences? Songs at 90bpm, 100, 110, etc?

Yes there are, just google search for them. There's also an app that can go through your music and create playlists: http://www.cadenceapp.com/

I have a laptop hooked up to the flat screen in my office, which is where I ride on my trainer. I watch tons of TDF, Giro, Vuelta and Classics videos on youtube. I like watching Contador and other specific (great climbers) riders or certain stages, etc so I'll que several up if they're short and play one after the other (wireless mouse). College football is good for a couple of hours too.

mindfulness - seriously, check it out ... or check-in as it were.

I've tried everything -- movies, tv/netflix show marathons, playlists -- and it always got so boring.

then I did some mindfulness reading/practice and incorporated it into training indoors, it seems to have worked to get into a flow almost every ride now. I still have some of the aforementioned distractions on at times, but getting to a point where I'm actually appreciating the opportunity to train and ride despite weather/family/personal/job responsibilities has been a true saving-grace.

Do the ride to a 2min 45 sec tempo pace and a 15 sec sprint. The 2:45 will start to pass real quick. Good way to kill a couple of hours.

I've been using a few things to help me.

1. Full triathlon bike course videos from Youtube on my smart TV
2. Meditation and breathing MP3s to help focus the mind
3. Podcasts
4. Documentaries and Nature shows on Netflix (Wildest Series is great)
5. Sporting events

I'd love to find a competitive trainer "League" to compete against others during the winter months here in Canada. I think the high end trainers have this ability but I've yet to invest in an expensive one. I need to research if there is a way to do this with regular trainer and an app of some kind.

If you're playing a video game while on the trainer, you're pretty much wasting your time. Better off doing a 1 hour workout where you actually get after it and then sit on the couch and play video games for 2hrs then to do 3 hrs on the trainer noodling along playing a game.

I DVRd pretty much all of Shark Week and am about done with that....I find fairly mindless stuff effective like Dirty Jobs or Nat Geo/Discovery animal shows where you can tune out for a couple minutes when the pain really sets in and you don't miss much

Trainer road or strava for the league. We can setup a group or team on either site that will track time.

Also, do you have any links to the videos on YouTube?

Look through this search and you'll find some good ones. I typically setup a TV Queue using my smartTV and SmartPhone so they play back to back.

Will that allow you to see who's leading the race in realtime or is it a go all out and compare times? I'm interested in a realtime feedback loop where I know my pace and need to push myself harder to place better. Nothing like the adrenaline of competition to get things moving!!

I'm going to be getting trainerroad once they launch the iOS app fully. I'm also using up the remaining days outside while I can before the snow hits. I'm interested in this if it's something that can be done.

I find the best way to make the time pass is a combination of TrainerRoad and bike race videos. I have a couple years of the Tour de France on DVD or I'll watch races on YouTube. I always listen to music and have the TV sound off. Recently I've have started using Pandora instead of my own play lists.

TrainerRoad keeps me focused on the specific workout for the day, the race video makes it seem, kind of, like I am outside on a group ride and it is easy to drift in and out of paying attention to it. The key for me is not trying to "escape" from the trainer but embrace it and turn it as much as possible into a bike ride, not a TV watching session on an uncomfortable couch.

TrainerRoad teams do not give real time results during workouts but you do see everyone else's workouts as soon as they finish. My cycling team set up a TrainerRoad team last year and it was very motivating even without real time "races."

There is a Computrainer studio in town and we did a team outing where we had about 15 guys doing a 3 hour head to head "race." That was fun. We're going to do that more often this winter.
