Outdoor Winter Swimming Championship
Pretty cool story in this morning's Boston Globe about a winter outdoor swimming championship event held recently on a lake in Vermont. They cut out a pair of 25-meter swim lanes from the ice and no wetsuits are allowed, much different from the polar plunges where people run into the water and then turn around and run right out.

the ability for the body to withstand cold is drastically underestimated. Though I have no desire to proof my notions on the subject wrong. These people are crazy.

"Swimming to Antarctica" by Lynne Cox went into some awesome detail about the effects of extreme cold water on the human body. I couldn't do something like what was listed in the story though.

You have to lower yourself into the water feet first, and wait in the water for the starter to start the race. Beyond the crazy, I'd never get past the upper thigh. My testicles would rise into my body so fast they'd puncture my spleen.

How does one practice for such an event without being sent for a psychiatric workup?
