Organ transplant

Anyone out there competing after organ transplant? I will be receiving a new kidney in early Jan and hoping it can restore some output levels and I can get back to a more active lifestyle...currently struggling with a hemo level of below 10 and hematocrit at about 3.2.... Makes anything other than mildly aerobic exercise difficult.

I have a different kidney issue but am living with only 1/2 of one kidney and have plenty of stamina, energy. The key will have a kidney that works properly. Happy for you and praying the transplant goes beautifully.

Hi,

I too have kidney issues (just had 1/3 of one removed for cancer, the remaining bits are operating at ~30% due to an auto-immune attack).

I am fortunate that I shouldn't need a transplant. However, my specialist has talked to me about other patients who have recovered from kidney transplant and competed in Ironman's. It will take a while for your body to get back (over a year) but once it figures it out, you will be fine.

Best of luck!

I don't have specific info, I am sure that your kidney doc and transplant surgeon will be able to advise you. I suspect that they will encourage you to be active and enjoy as normal a life as possible.

The one thing you will really have to be careful of is dehydration. Kidneys are pretty sensitive to blood volume and severe dehydration can damage even healthy, native kidneys. I'm sure the last thing you want to do is stress your transplanted kidney by getting too volume depleted. Even more so than the average person, you will have to pay attention to making sure that you are peeing regularly while racing (urine output is a great monitor of hydration status).

Thanks for the great info. I certainly have had to dial things in this past year with kidney function dropping to 10% and having to be super mindful of keeping a very low potassium intake. I'm certainly hopeful that I can get back to a high output but will be happy to be healthy and participating no matter what the capacity as any level will be a bonus. Still I remain hopeful that I can once again return to Maui for the Xterra Worlds and maybe even get a roll down somewhere for a 70.3 Worlds...gotta set goals!
