Orca Aero Shoe Covers
Just came across this on the TriSports website http://www.trisports.com/...ero-shoe-covers.html

I'm curious. Could this be a new category of gear coming out?

Orca says they'll save you 8 watts at 40km/h or 24 seconds over the 40 km distance (1:48 over the Ironman distance).

Sebastian Kienle wore them in Frankfurt last year as seen here http://www.slowtwitch.com/...m_returns__4433.html

I guess it really depends on your setup. They will save Time over tri shoes and pedals below them, but will it be as much as Orca advertises??
Nevertheless it is good Performance gain for the money...imao

they seem like they would be easy to lose coming out of t1 as (unless I'm missing something) it looks like you need to have them at least rolled a little ways down to secure your strap. Wonder how quick they deform if you have to stretch them like that. If they were slick when wet it might be a problem too ;)

Hmm, looks like you could get them on a pair of S-Work trivents with the rear entry... that might be sweet.

When a tri company like orca produces shoe covers they will probably think about The Situation in t1 and about getting them on easily

With a boa system. Straps still seem like they would be a bit of a hassle.

Fwiw, just because a company has a name behind them doesn't mean they get everything right, especially when it comes to clothing. Aero covers in general come in (for the most part) two flavors, the kind that are slow and the kind that are tough to get on and stretch. (PI covers come to mind.) Just wondering where the Orca's fall.

No. But if they are the wind/water proof material they probably help a little.

I have some road shoe covers that I cut off because the tops were baggy. They look very similar.

I've always thought about shoe covers but for me any extra time getting them on in T1 is unacceptable (particularly as you aren't certain to save time with shoe covers.) I have looked into modifying a normal set to see if I could get them to fit over the shoe but not require 'putting on'. My current trial is mearly taping all vents/ mesh of the shoe. Because I have back-opening shoes I can tape almost all of the front end which may or may not be worth anything, but it's very cheap and has an extremely high probability of not being slower, so worth a shot.

Nice, so they took that image from our site, cropped it and use it to sell shoe covers. Sweet.

The pic is actually my shoes in those covers.

Hi Guys

The video posted earlier in this thread is pretty self-explanatory on how easy these aero shoe covers are to get on in T1! In regards to the stretch, these are made from a very thin neoprene with a nylon lining, so the stretch and return is similar to a wetsuit ie. will still be tight after a lot of use. In regards to the time it will save you, this data was collected with Sebi Kienle in a wind tunnel, so this is the amount of watts/time that was saved with his current setup. So if it can make one of the fastest cyclists in triathlon this much faster, surely they will do at least similar for you ;-)

Herbert, is it the photo of both shoes with the white background or the single shoe on the carpet?

BS. Even the Drag2Zero shoe covers won't save you that. Have them send me a pair and I'll test them in the velodrome.

It was interesting that Sebi did not wear them at Kona. TJ has his own pair of custom covers made at his shop by the same people that make the Hen House. TJ used them I believe at IM MT and also at Kona last year. If you look at the picture of his bike from Lava, he already had them attached when he dropped his bike off in transition. He just pulled them over the back when he got on the bike.
