My PowerTap will probably fit the bill for me, but only having one for a short time I can't really say I have "never gone back." For me the biggest thing that has stood the test of time is a GPS watch. I starting wearing one in 2011, and probably have done less than 5 runs without GPS tracking since the that day. I can say without a doubt that wearing a watch while running makes me faster, it's the whip I need to make me push myself. Without a watch I get lost in pace and distance and tend to lose focus and motivation.

Powertap / Cycleops / Saris

STI shifters on the road bike. Nothing gave me more of an instant bump in safety, precision and ability to react in road racing. Problem was when they came out within a year everyone bought them and the advantages slimmed down. Oh well!

No question on ISM. Once I hung my nuts off the front of that thing it was akin to DiCaprio standing on the bow of Titanic.....'I'm the king of the world!'.

Oh God yes this!

I went from "tolerating" my TT rig, to genuinely looking forward to riding it.

Cheap (<$30) sunglasses. After losing my 2nd one that was moderately pricey, and replacing it with $4 DeWalt sunglasses and noticing that the DeWalt's were just as comfortable and no more fear of scratching/breaking/loosing them, I'm sticking with them.

Bont Shoes (or anything heat moldable) - in my quest for the perfect cycling shoes the Bont Vaypor+ so far are the best for me out of all the shoes I've tried....I might benefit from a full custom next time or the wide version though once my current pair wears out
Wide Shoes (running & everything else even)....I can't believe I suffered for so long with tight shoes without realizing that I was wearing the wrong shoe size.

What is the one (or two) thing(s) that you find indispensable to training or racing? Nutrition, gadget, electronic, etc...

I'd have to say a power meter for me. I've been training and racing with one for 5+ years now and it's completely changed the way I ride (for the better). I know some people like to just go off RPE, but I don't think I'll ever go back to biking without a power meter.

not just any power meter, but SRM for me.

Got my first Powertap in fall of 2010, switched to a Quarq in fall of 2011, then switched to a SRM in fall of 2012, added a second SRM in fall of 2013

tri bars and deep dish wheels.

first started tris with a used trek 1200 i bought for 500$. added tri bars and campy shamels and was sub-60 in oly bike splits when I was 19. I loved blowing past all the 5-6K$ bikes on the course.

Powermeter: Sort of. I've had one long enough that I can gauge efforts pretty well when I'm fit.
PMC: This is a lot harder to do without a PM.
Bibs: I mean.
Rollers: may I never have to use a trainer, or worse, a Computrainer, again.
Speedplay: stomp & go and cornering clearance.
Semi-rimless or rimless glasses: How can you see behind you with a huge bar in your line of sight?
Stroopwaffles: 180 calories and it actually tastes good.
Sodastream Coke syrup: Coke tastes better than any sports drink.
