I saw a helmet being worn by Emma Johansson from Sweden in the TT (sorry can't get a pic as have only seen it on TV), that I have never seen before. It is very wide and flat - I've never seen it commercially available.

So what's the deal with Olympic cycling, do they run under UCI rules?

I believe they do. Every sport has a official federation. The UCI is it for cycling. The "commercially available" rule in cycling has been widely ignored for years. Its too bad I wish a company had to produce and actually sell say 500 of a certain item to fulfill the clause. Instead the UCI seems to pick a rule of the month that no one cares about and enforce it.

Hmmm, I've also very skeptical of the "commercially available" rule. I read somewhere (may have been ST) that a product has to be released within 9 months of being used in a pro race.

So what happens if the product isn't released? Fine? Ban from pro tour? Nothing? I find it hard to believe the UCI would retrospectively strip titles for non compliance.

They never have stripped any because of it. They really haven't defined what commercially available is. My guess is that a mfg just says they are available, but custommade. Price is 20,000 for the helmet. We just didn't get any takers.

Yeah... the British Cycling team's bikes are publicly available... maybe at $40,000 a pop or something like that. Seriously (well, I may have gotten the figure wrong, but that's the general idea).

The helmet is reviewed here:

it looks completely ridiculous.

Will this be a game changer for Specialized, in both sales and product design, or will it not move the sales and design needle versus those in Specialized's competitive set?
