Oliver BC Half Iron
Thinking of registering for this race but a bit apprehensive due to the race director's cancelled races in the past. Also see he changed the name from Outback to Dynamic Events. On the positive side looks like #'s are good, already 280 signed up. Anyone with any insight???

Other former outback races are under new management, maybe Joe has less on his plate now.

Looks like the Three Lakes Tri series is actually being put on by totally different owners who are competing with Joe, so I would doubt that he has any less on his plate or that his events are getting any better...

I don't see Joe putting a race on in Sylvan. With another event at Cultus he may get squeezed out. Point was he should have fewer races to run overall and can maybe focus on Oliver.

It's a good course and venue.

Joe seems to have finally got his shit together, so I think it will be fine.

Did the shorter distance last year, registered for the half this year. I really like the course (well, not overly fond of the run to T1), only a little climbing and the run is pretty flat so I figure it is a great early season Tri.

Plus, last year the Pad Thai truck for after race food was GREAT!

Doesn't look like Joe has his shit together, seems he's changing suppliers to get out of paying debt to the old ones. Unfortunately same old Joe..... I've heard of suppliers who are still owed money from 2014 events! Hopefully the new suppliers get their money up front!

I have done the race for the last 5 years and have always enjoyed it. Numbers are down from its peak (just like many other races). But it seemed healthy last year.

Thanks to all for your input, signed up in early April. Hope Joe has his stuff together and puts on a good race, really looking forward to it as I've been training hard and will be my first race of the year.

Yep, TriFaster is bang on. Joe has a lot of outstanding debt and the new brand is him trying to avoid that. I think it is a combination of him switching suppliers to avoid them having leverage to get that debt paid and no one wanting to works with him because they don't get paid for their work!

Despite what the Symonds kids says =-) Joe Dixon has run an exceptional half iron distance race in the community of Oliver for the past decade. The swim course has has its problems, the bike has been unwaveringly solid and FAST, and (most years) the run course has been accurately measured and staffed. Once the rat bastards in Victoria get their race date set for good, Joe Dixon can move back to Kelowna and solidify the Oliver Half as the premier early season half in the Pacific Northwest.

I really don't get why he didn't sell Oliver to WTC before they bought Lifesport's races.

Just to give some accurate insight...

Outback Events as a company ceased to exist once all shareholder conflict was resolved.

Dynamic Race Events was born, it is now the event management company that does and will continue to produce the Wine Capital of Canada Triathlon (June 6th), the Oliver Half Iron (June 7th) and the Cultus Lake Triathlon (Sept 13th).

I am thrilled to say that these events have more sponsors in 2015 than they've had since 2010 and are going strong.

Certainly, there were some challenges that were faced and have been handled head on...and should anyone on this thread have contact with suppliers who feel they have not been dealt with, feel free to contact us.

We are indeed moving forward with a few new suppliers this year, most namely, our timing company, who is local to us in BC and also happens to take care of our registration.

We wholeheartedly appreciate all the support we've received and look forward to exceeding expectations this year and for many to come.

In light of the cancellation of the http://www.threelakestriathlonseries.com event that was announced yesterday, we are extending our early registration pricing until Monday May 11th @ 11:59pm to allow anyone who was affected by the cancellation to reorganize their race schedule and benefit from the early registration pricing.

All the best.

If I am not mistaken, your former timing company was local... Sounds like someone is just trying to get out of paying their suppliers. Again. I hope the new suppliers know what they are getting themselves into and don't mind working for free.

Accurate insight, really? Whose insight? One that is skewed?

Thank god I did not sign up for this race this year as I heard that it was an absolute shit show. Not enough volunteers - oh, I wonder why, because no one wants to work with Joe. There were major mistakes on the bike with people being misdirected and the run was at least 1km long. Wow. Great job!

The numbers were way down also.

Agreed that the change of suppliers were all as a result of debt. Here's some accurate insight: the timing company would only get paid the day before the race ... from the previous year! Not sure what 'local' timing means since the other is a local one, as well. Interesting spin on trying to sound like supporting local businesses.

I am not sure why there's always a defence in terms of money, ie, it's a well known fact that Joe owes everyone money but Joe does not seem to think so. Um, okay, I guess the suppliers are lying then. Just man up. Actually, man up and give the race to someone else. There is no shame in saying I can't do this anymore.

Has anyone been able to find the 1/2 results for this year? The link from the site does not seem to be working.

Once again a poorly run race, it does not have a good reputation. I did not race, but people I spoke with said it was chaos with bikers being sent in the wrong directions, some people biking much too little, others much too long. Its unfortunate when you pay a race entry fee, and its put on with so little effort to make things right like the volunteers able to point athletes in the correct direction. I stopped doing any races that Joe is involved with a long time ago. It is not only the athletes that suffer, but the suppliers that are involved with the race who will have trouble getting payed.

Both athletes and suppliers should take more due diligence in deciding to be apart of this race. There are lots of other options out there for races to be apart of, and I for one would not be upset if this race did not thrive under current RD. It is a great course, and venue, and if it was in the hands of another RD I would go back again!

Thanks for the link Nate. 247 participants. Did they revert to the bike racks by the lake as opposed to by the school when the race got big? Any other first hand experience from the race as far as organization, aid stations go?

Yeah Trans was up top, good spot for it I thought. Worked well for the size. I thought Aid might be a problem but I didn't find that as an issue-. The volunteers were great and did a very good job for how little were there. Organization seemed good, just a lack of people, volunteers and people directing really.
