what's with the US women and their bike skills and style?
Ertel spent the whole race at least a bike length off the wheel in front before finally getting dropped. Maybe if she could correctly hold a wheel the ride would've been easier for her.
Haskins had a water bottle mounted to her handle bars, i'm suprised this was even draft legal.
Bennett spent every hill on her aerobars grinding away in the middle of the group.

Not knocking them but I think it says a lot about being brought up doing predominately draft legal riding and cycle racing vs non drafting. The euros looked a lot more comfortable on the bike in terms of skills and confidence.

I think you're making an awful lot of assumptions.

did u watch the race?
haskins did have a bottle on her handlebars
bennett did ride on her aerobars up the hill grinding away each time
ertel cant hold a wheel.
so what am i assuming? that the euros are in general more skilled?

well she didn't have to do anything except come into T2 with the lead group and follow any moves that Fernandez made.

She was the fastest runner in the group, and the bookies' no. favourite to win gold by quite a big margin. (7/4 vs 3/1 for Fernandez)

She knew she could outrun Fernandez because she had done it umpteen times before and had only ever been outsplit once (IIRC) on the run by Fernandez in like 3 years of racing, so the pressure wasn't on her to do anything special.

I'm actually surprised Fernandez, as something of a bike specialist as well, did not try to make a break for it on the bike and gain some 20-30s o Snowsill going into T2. She must have known that if she came into T2 with Snowsill there was no way she was ever going to get Gold.

She's good - probably the best woman ever - but she's not THAT good. In the biggest purse race in history (Hy Vee 2007), she got dropped by the lead pack of swimmers, tried like hell to pull the chase pack back up to the leaders on the bike (never could), and eventually dropped out.

whats wrong with staying in the aero bars on the hills?

as I understand it, math suggests that is still the quickest way up most hills.

some random thoughts on last night:

(1) what a spectacular venue for a triathlon. between the glass-like water, to the pagoda, to the massive stands for spectators, to the flag wavers in formation to the technical bike course with a nice hill in it, it doesn't get much better than that. those water-level shots of the swim were particularly neat.
(2) that was one impressive run by snowsill from the gun. there are going to be a lot of guys tonight who wish they had her split.
(3) i was a little surprised that nobody tried to break away on one of the climbs knowing that snowsill and fernandes would easily out run them if a pack rolled into t2 together.
(4) ertel's riding tactics were bizarre -- get dropped on the big hill and then descend faster than anyone to get back to the pack. was she concerning energy on the climb thinking that the draft effects weren't that great on the climb?
(5) snowsill's tactics were perfect -- get out of the water with the lead pack and then sit in for most (all) of the bike. i barely saw her on the bike leg because she was so nicely tucked in for the draft. i can't say the same for fernandes bc it seemed like she was at the front for most of the bike does anyone know what some the bickering was about at the front? who was pissed at whom for not pulling?
(6) what was the deal with all the meaningless slo-mos? i didn't have commentary but they kept on showing slo-mos where normally something happens but nothing appeared to be going on. what was the deal with all the time spent on the chase pack over a minute back?

The New Specialized Wind Tunnel
Will this be a game changer for Specialized, in both sales and product design, or will it not move the sales and design needle versus those in Specialized's competitive set?
Yes, Game Changer
