I think my favorite thing about my 9.9 is how adjustable the front end is. Very happy with the ability to adjust to my preferred 40k TT position without heroics. That has not been the case with a few other front ends I rose in the past.

Although a high quality torque wrench is obviously mandatory even all the random, but very specific torque settings.

Hi Carl

My derailleur settings were being an issue and I managed to figure that the bb cable guide was the culprit. Trying to loosen the fastener that holds the bbcg I noticed that the entire fastening assembly rotated. The clinching bolt in the frame was loose hence the loose bbcg. I have managed to drill out the fastener and remove the entire clinching bolt. It seems though that the aperture in the frame has enlarged somewhat. Is the clinching bolt installed prior to moulding of the bb section or done post production. ie will I be able to re-install a slightly larger clinching bolt and properly this time re-attach the bbcg?

thanks

bernd

Carl,

I once ran across something on here from someone saying that the first generation draft boxes were not fitted to the frame properly.

Well, Saturday I was going about 24 mph on a flat and all of a sudden my rear wheel completely locked up. I am amazed that I did not go down although I went completely sideways and I am also fortunate my wife was far enough behind me not to hit me. Well, the draft pack top portion came off and the bottom bracket jammed into my tire. The road burned straight through my tire and almost ruined my wheel.

Question here is this, is there a recall on the draft box that I do not know about? I feel like at the very least I should get a replacement draft box. It would be nice if they would give me another tube and tire.

Any thoughts?

I had a similar incident with my draftbox a few weeks ago. My lbs here in Dayton was able to get the speed box replaced for me under warranty. I didn't burn through my tire thank god so I cant answer that part of your question. I have about 200 miles on the new draft box and it works great.

wew all these issues!!!!!! draft boxes falling down, squeaky headsets, b b cable guides coming loose, coroding bolts and fasteners, no replacement parts available etc etc, hmm I have never had these issues with my 13 other italian bikes over a period of 25 years.
I think I will turn my speed concept or 'squeak concept' into a single speed fixie or use it as a stand outside the front door of my bussiness to hold up my advertising board maybe with a wicker basket attached to the handlebar with flowers in it.

Yep. I agree!

I had also problems with speedBox attachment and two build quality issues with SC frame in half year (one cracked frame and one frame mold failure). Great riding feel and looks great but quality.... Carls team should do something for build quality processes in factory's, I think...

First of all, I would like to thanks Carl for his support in my case.

I have SC9.9 with all of those flaws mention here (except the seat post slipping problem).

Squeaking problem is the one that I think Trek should consider a recall since the root cause of this problem might compromise the headset integrity and in my case, a serious safety issue.

If you have preload nut in natural aluminum color, you should consider replace with the new black preload nut or adding shim around it.

it's a post-production piece called a riv-nut or nut-sert. some shops have a repair capability which allows them to remove the original and replace with the same part. in your case, now that the original hole has been enlarged, you will have to try and find an M5 riv-nut with a larger flange or pull the cranks and BB and use a standard hex nut on the backside. it's possible a bike shop would have a larger flange nutsert and installation tool. recommend adding epoxy to the former (only to the exterior - keep it out of the threads!) and blue locktite for the latter.

Re: Official Speed Concept Owners Thread [Btmagician13] [In reply to] Quote | Reply

more accurately, the original draft boxes did not clamp up to the frame as well as intended (they fit fine, but could slip down and reduce tire clearance...sometimes rubbing tires), hence the redesign.

the 2nd generation draft box has been available to all original owners of the 1st box as a no cost warranty item since about this time last year. your Trek dealer should have no problem obtaining one: PN420505 and in stock in all domestic warehouses.

I don't know how long you've had you Speed Concept, but all the items you mention have been addressed...most of them for about a year now. If the assembly date of your bike predates those fixes there are a number of no-cost replacements (labor not included) available to you, many of which are listed here. If you have other specific concerns let me know and I'll do my best to point you or your Trek dealer to the right part numbers or processes to remedy the issue.

This is interesting! When I saw fracture of my original frame, seat post clamp was 7.2 Nm version, now my Trek warranty replacement frame (wich is also going to warranty...) has 11 Nm version? So my conclusion is that Trek replaces my original newer frame to older version of 7.5 model with all those replacement programs?

Only if the warranty replacement was new old stock. Not sure how that would happen, but it may explain what you're seeing. Still, even in that case all the 1st generation replacement parts would apply as needed.

Thanks Carl for information.

LBS said that the replacement came straight from the TREK U.S.A.That's why I had to wait it like month in last summer.... So it can't be "new old stock"?

Depends on what is in the warranty warehouse. Their inventory turnover isn't the same as regular distribution (happily...except perhaps when it causes something like this). Still, we're always looking to improve our processes and can't act on what we don't know is happening, so I'll send a note to our warranty department as a heads-up with your experience as an example. Thanks for bringing it up.

Thank you Carl. I took the removed nut to a specialised fastener consultant. He noted before, I explained to him where the item came from and its function, that it had been installed improperly (scew) The bracket into which the riv-nut is inserted is too thin to accomodate a larger M5 nut. The consultant indicated it might crack the bracket due to the now possible greater force required to compress an M5 riv-nut. In my opinion it renders the frame useless. Also if it has been installed incorrectly at the factory then this is now a warranty issue. perhaps a frame replacement.

again thanks for you kind personal input and assistance I appreciate it

I bought my 9.5 from Cycle Werks in Los Angeles in october 2010 and my wife bought hers from Cycle Lab in South Africa in february 2011. The bottom bracket cable guide issue is related to my wife's bike. mine just sqeaks. Do I request the replacement parts from my local Trek dealer here in the UK where I live or do I request sets from each dealer in two different countries? Or directly from you?

Thanks

Bernd

Ideally the requests go through the shops where the bikes were purchased, but in your case this isn't really efficient. You should be able to work through your nearest Trek dealer. Having some sort of proof of original ownership to show them wouldn't be a bad idea.

Whether the rivnut was installed improperly to begin with or not, your dealer might've been able to remove and repair it without enlarging the hole as you did. Our factory repair center definitely could've. I don't know what effect this may have on your warranty standing. You could check with our customer service personnel via this link, or just explain to the Trek dealer when they file the claim.

What is everyone using for mounting their computers? I have a Garmin Edge 500 that I previously had on the stem of my last bike. I stuck it on one of the aero bars this past weekend for a duathlon but it won't be able to stay there - hits my arm plus I'm putting a water bottle between the bars. It would fit between the pads but has to twist to lock into the mount and that isn't happening between the pads.

Carl, how do I know if I have a first generation draft box that needs to be replaced? No apparent slippage yet, but I don't want a disaster like the ones described! Bought my SC 9.5 in August '11. Thank you!

Hi Carl

I registered the bikes on TREK's website so it shouldn't be an issue for you to establish my proof of ownership.
regarding your possible allusion that I possibly wantonly hacked away at the rivnut fastener and that I am incabable of delicate work is premature. I am a cabinet maker by trade and delicate craftmanship is my forte.

As a matter of fact the nearest trek dealer that I went to to have the bb bearings pulled approached the frame with a big hammer and blunt pin to 'drift' the bearings out. Using that approach I seriously doubt that the carbon bracket mounting for the bb cable guide would have survived your appointed dealer's approach . They also could not diagnose the initial issue of the bb cable guide being loose and hence affecting the shifting. They as a matter of fact threw their hands up in the air and said that have no idea.

Why doesn't TREK do a recall on all Speed Concepts and address all these issues. We owners have registered our bikes as said on your site, thus you have our details. You produce high end (price wise) products maybe you should adopt the approach of the motor industry in instances like this. I am now expected to invest a lot of time and effort and as a consequence money to run around fixing a myriad of issues that I have not caused or am responsible for. Hell if my Porsche had an issue the dealer would knock at my door and collect the car and within a short while I will be informed that the problem is addressed and resolved with minimal impact to my time and life.

At the end of the day we are not talking about a kettle or a toaster, a bicycle is a mode of transport and I have my body on it. If anything fails it could potentially be fatal. After all this I per chance don't know now if a TREK, or to be fair a Speed Concept, product is safe to ride on anymore.

I KINDLY REQUEST THAT THE CEO OF TREK EMAIL ME AND RESOLVES THIS ISSUE get the chief to roll up his/her sleeves on this one.

Carl I thank you for your effort , courtesy and concerns but a forum is not the most savoury platform to find a resolution to this agenda.

Bernd

Joel, I also had this concern. I bought a piece of carbon tubing from Vision that runs between the aerobars. Computer mount from Vision. It doesn't fit perfectly on my 7.8 SC, but it's close enough, and looks great.

I use the Dark Speed Works bento box designed for the SC. It is much more useful than the Trek bento and it will easily hold the Hutchinson Fast Air and more.
